University of Southern Maine ABSN 2016

Published

Hello! I just received my acceptance letter to the ABSN at USM. I was wondering if anyone else will also be attending this program? It would be great to meet others before the start of the term! I live in Portland, OR, and I have never been to Maine, but I hear great things. I am really nervous and really excited!

I'm a little bit late to the party, but I'm also entering the ABSN program at USM this summer. Like some of the other folks here, I went ahead and took Nutrition this spring, lightening the load a bit for the summer session. My other degree is in business, as well as a master's in organizational leadership. I did spend 12 years in the Army as a combat medic, which likely helped my application a bit.

I look forward to meeting the rest of the cohort May 16. If you want, you can find me on Facebook.com/jeff.thiv

I am also a little late to the party! I graduated with my undergraduate in criminal justice so this is a little bit of a career change for me! I have been working as a clinical care technician at a hosptial on the cardiac unit for some time now so I am hoping that will help me out in the long run. Like some of you, I do not come from a strong science background. I am currently finishing up A&P 2 online. My college nutrition course thankfully transferred over so I am hoping that the course load will be a little bit lighter. I am very nervous but so excited to start in May!

Hello All,

I too received an acceptance letter...for May 2017. I'm wondering if any of you would be willing to share some information with me about the program itself. Would love to hear from those currently in the programs or those of you who have already graduated. Any information would be greatly appreciated?

Is the program doable?

Are there people in the program and working?

What is the dropout rate? Has anyone from your cohort dropped out?

Do you get some time off?

Housing in the area.

Are the faculty members helpful? Are they interested in the students success?

It would also be nice to know what books will be used so that I can get ahead of the reading.

I'm more than happy to share my email address with anyone who is willing to help with my questions and concerns via email.

THANK YOU

Hi - I ended up going to a different accelerated program in Oregon (OHSU), and I can give you my experience from the school I went to. I don't know if that will help you at all... but I can speak to a couple of these points.

So far (I have completed one term) the program is very doable. The first term I had 15 credits - pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health promotion. I quit my job before starting the program, which was helpful. There are a few people in our cohort who are working, but pretty part time. I actually had a lot of free time the first term, and I think this is largely due to being good with time management. Next term, I am going to work one day per week to make a little extra cash. Only one person in our cohort dropped out, but she was a single mom who needed to work, and she dropped out within the first two week. The corhot from the previous year didn't have a single student drop out.

A huge part of the program is really about time management. I thought my first term of nursing school was easier than anatomy and physiology. I know it's going to get harder - but yes it is doable. If you got A's in all of your pre-reqs and are good with time management, you will be fine.

I would recommend taking nutrition if you haven't already. I took nutrition online at a community college in Oregon, and USM accepted this for credit. Otherwise you have to take it the first term.

Hi,

Congratulations on your acceptance! I also received an acceptance letter and will be apart of the 2017 ABSN cohort. I will also be looking for housing (moving cross country). I am not sure in what format prior classes have communicated with,.. if they set up FB groups for our cohorts? I would love to reach out as a lot of us might be seeking the same information & we might be able to help each other out.

Hi 3rin,

I'm also dying to get more information. I plan on searching through facebook and asking former cohorts about the program. I have contacted the school. According to them, there will not be any information session before the program starts!! Have you gotten any info?

Thank you so much for responding! I'm hoping my first semester would be as great as yours! I've also taken nutrition and the school has informed me that they would accept it.

I'm trying to take pharmacology and pathophysiology before starting the program.
