University of Southern Maine ABSN 2016

Published

Hello! I just received my acceptance letter to the ABSN at USM. I was wondering if anyone else will also be attending this program? It would be great to meet others before the start of the term! I live in Portland, OR, and I have never been to Maine, but I hear great things. I am really nervous and really excited!

Hi there! I got the same news and just sent in my confirmation today! However, I will only be coming up from New Hampshire versus the journey that you have ahead of you :) If you have any questions or would like any input on finding housing, I did live in Portland for a few years and still have friends in the area, and I would be happy to help. In the meanwhile, I just have to finish out A&P II and wait through what will feel like both the longest and shortest five-ish months that lie ahead...

Congratulations! Did you apply to any other schools? I also applied to Quinnipiac in Connecticut and OHSU in Portland, OR, but I won't hear back until March. :( And thank you! I may take you up on that offer. I do have one friend who previously lived in Portland, ME. It will be quite the change!

Thank you! And congratulations to you as well! From what I saw on these message boards it appears that getting in is no easy feat... USM was actually the only program to which I applied, as I wanted to stay in the MA-NH-ME-area and USM was the only accelerated program where I met the comparatively minimal prerequisite requirements. Had I not been accepted to USM, I was also looking at UNE, UMass Boston and Amherst, and MGH. However, after taking the additional prereqs and given the application due dates and program start dates, it would have been about a year longer before I could even start an ASBN program O_o

I had the same problem. I have taken stats, A&P sequence, cellular bio, nutrition, and lifespan psychology. I have never taken any chemistry classes, so there were very few schools I could even apply to. I am taking microbiology winter quarter. What is your undergrad degree in?

Hello!

I just sent in my deposit for a place in the Summer 2016 program as well! I grew up in Portland, but have been living in New Hampshire since I went away for college. My first degree was a dual major in History & Justice Studies. I took a glance today, but haven't seen a Facebook group started for our cohort yet. I'm really excited to meet the rest of the group!

Are you guys thinking about taking Nutrition or Pathophysiology in advance? I'm really tempted to take them before May to save on tuition and to make that first semester a bit more manageable, but I'm not sure how common it is. I didn't take many science courses with my History major, so I think I might try to get into the science mind by taking them this spring.

Congratulations to you both :) looking forward to meeting you at orientation or when classes start!

Great to hear from you!

I have a B.S. in Psychology for Portland State University in Portland, OR. I also took very few science courses with my degree.

I took nutrition this term at a community college, and I was hoping that it would transfer over. I had to take it for another program that I applied to. I am very tempted to take pathophysiology next term, but it doesn't work out great with my schedule. I currently work full time, and I will be taking two other classes next term. During the nursing program, I will not be working, so I will have much more time to dedicate to my studies.

Do you know when the orientation is? I'm nervous about that, because I will have to pay for a flight out. I hope they give up ample time to prepare for it. :(

Hi!

I have also decided to attend the USM ABSN Program in May and am so excited! I'm a bit anxious to get some additional information regarding our next steps and am also wondering what our schedule is going to be looking like for the May start date. Has anyone received any follow-up information?

I am hoping that my Nutrition courses transfer in so I don't have to take it again -- and I never even thought about taking Pathophysiology ahead of time, but what a great idea that would have been to help lighten the load a little bit our first semester.

I currently live in Southern NJ, am a little older than some of you may be (32 years old) and I have a dog (black lab) that will be coming with me so I am looking into off-campus housing options as well. I've been living on my own for some time now, so the roommate situation or on campus living isn't my ideal situation, but obviously am open to options that may work out a bit easier. Anyone else looking for housing or have any leads on potential places?

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hello -

We chatted on Instagram a bit a while back. I have not received any additional information about the program.

However, I did begin my certified profile/background check. It takes a while to get all of the vaccines and everything in order. I still need to get a couple of titers done. I think I will also complete my American Red Cross BLS class. I e-mailed the department, and they said we could get it done the first week of class, but I don't want to worry about it.

I e-mailed Brenda Webster and she asked me to send he a direct copy of my official transcript to show that I had completed the course. I'm sure if you e-mail her, she would be happy to help you. They accepted my course and I took it at a community college in Portland, OR, so I am sure you will be fine.

I have the same concerns over housing. I have kind of been browsing Craigslist... but that's it. :sorry:

I'm kind of late to the party (seems like this thread started months ago), but I'll also be attending the accelerated program at USM in May. I currently live in Portland as well, so if any out-of-staters have any questions about the area, let me know!

Hello! Congrats and thank you! I might be messaging around to see what I can find when I move out there.

Please keep us updated on how you like the program! I am moving back to Maine after a year of being away and plan to apply to USM's ABSN program.
