University of South Alabama-anyone from California apply there?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

hello all,

this is my first post and i am hoping some of you have some news about what i am needing to know. i live in southern california and i would like to apply to university of south alabama; i have emailed for info about the program and i was told this:

"you also need to inquire at your state board of nursing if they will accept your training as an np through an on-line program out of state if you reside outside of alabama. some states such as new york do not allow for this or have stipulations for approval first."

i called the state board and my call was sent to a voicemail of someone who "could help me." as of yet, i have heard nothing back from them. one could grow old and die waiting to hear back from them. i am currently in a pmhnp program but need to transfer to another program and i don;t want to wait around forever.

can someone here who is from california and has been in their program let me know about this? i don't want to apply to a program only to find out later on that i can't take the ancc exam.

thanks in advance:rolleyes:

Hey,

I am actually a student at USA (I don't live in CA) but I know there is at least one student from CA in my class.

Hope that helps

Thanks for your response.

lisa,

i hope i am answering you correctly. i'm fairly new to this site also. i live in so. cal also. i have been trying to get more info on out of state on line programs also. i have calls out to the brn, but no calls back. i did get one email that said they don't accredit out of state or out of country programs. then i talked to a friend, and she said if i go through an out of state program that the brn doesn't accredit, that it will be very hard, if not impossible for me to get a job in ca.

then in reading on in allnurses.com, it sounds like there are some nps in ca that have gone through out of state programs and have gotten jobs. so, i'm very confused.

i need an online program, as i live too far from all schools, and it seems the only one is western univ, but i can't apply until aug for next fall semester.

i'm very interested in keeping in touch with you to see what other info you find. i don't know how to pm somebody, but i'd love it if you would, if you know how. good luck!

hi julee,

i have not heard anything from our brn which i find ridiculous. i will most likely call again and insist on speaking with someone. i left a message last week plus i emailed there and no one bothered to get back to me to answer my simple question. it should not be this way but it is like jumping through hoops to get this question answered.

i am also looking at gonzaga university in spokane, washington. i know of someone who lives in valencia, ca who is a student there. as far as i know with the online programs, you do most classes online and your clinicals bnear your home and you have to do a few classes on the campus but it is over a weekend.

i would have pm'd you but it would not allow me to do this here as it said something about having to do 15 posts or something of that nature. in any case i will let you know when i hear something from the brn.

There are a lot of NP's who practice in CA yet received their NP training outside of CA like myself. I attended a classroom-based program, however. But still, I haven't heard of stipulations by the BRN against on-line programs. The BRN website lists approved NP programs in the website. Notice that these are schools that are located in California. The reason for that is if you graduate from one of these CA-approved NP programs, you don't need to take national certification (ie, from ANCC or AANP) in order to be certified as an NP in CA. If you graduated from an out of state program, you need to pass the national certification exam to qualify for NP certification in CA. If you can sit for any of the national certification exams and your school is accredited by CCNE or NLNAC, it is highly likely that CA will give you eligibility to be certified as an NP.
