University of Rochester ABSN Spring 2015

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi! I just wanted to make a thread for University of Rochester School of Nursing ABSN Spring 2015.

Did you guys have phone interviews?

Any of you guys receive any call/ email from the school yet?

Good luck to everyone! :)

The group is set to closed which means anyone can find the group, but only members can see posts. I'll check with customer service to see if they know what's going on. In the meantime, if you want you can send me a friend request and I can add you to the group. You can find me by searching with my email address which is [email protected].

Continuing with your comments above...I live in Corn Hill which I've found to be affordable and quiet. However I miss the atmosphere of Park Ave so I'm probably moving back there in November. Also, they're just finishing completion on the new lofts on Mount Hope Ave which I believe are now being leased. I think they're being geared toward URMC students due to the close proximity to Strong and the nursing school, so this might be something to look into as well. It can't be more than a 10 minute walk to Helen Wood Hall from the lofts. My advice to anyone moving out here from a warmer climate would be to move as close to the nursing school as possible. Our Western NY winters can be brutal and Rochester tends to see a great deal of snow during the period of January-March. I would even go so far as to say that if possible, try to move someplace within 15-20 minute walking distance of the nursing school to avoid driving during some of our more severe weather.

Also, I love Trader Joe's but unlike many other states, ours does not sell wine due to state law. It's too bad, I miss my $3 bottles of Charles Shaw when I lived in NC. Anyway, you'll also come to fall in love with (in my opinion) the most sacred and holy of grocery chains, a paradise we call Wegmans. Just trust me on this one.

Thank you so much for the great info.

Can you tell when where do people mainly go to look for places to rent?

I went on craigslist and there is like nothing on there :(

Wowww, Thank you Billy this is great info.

I must ask what is the state law for wine lol ?

In regards to housing what is the best way that I can find housing?

I am planning a trip to take a look at the area and maybe meet with some Nursing staff next month in October.

Thank you for your great help

Basically New York State is one of the top wine producers in the nation besides California. Wineries and liquor stores are opposed to allowing grocery stores to sell wine because they fear it would mean a drastic loss in their sales. There are many, many wineries located around the Finger Lakes (just a short drive from Rochester), so if you like wine that's where to go.

Have you asked UofR if there is any student housing available to you? There are also some useful websites other than Craigslist such as newdigs.com, zumper.com and padmapper.com. I like these sites because they present to you where these available apartments are for rent on a map and allow you to select price range, # of bedrooms, etc. Some of the nicer (and safer) areas are Park Ave, Corn Hill and the area around the nursing school.

Hi everyone! I found this posting and wanted to give a HUGE congratulations to everyone who has been accepted! I also found out last week that I've been accepted!!!!!!!!!! It's going to be a crazy year for us!

I tried to join the FB group but I cannot find it. Can someone add me ([email protected])? I didnt want to send BillyD a random FB friend request since he wouldn't know who I was haha & I cannot find the group when I search "UofR School of Nursing ABPNN - January 2015" :(

Hi there jseg04! Congrats on your acceptance. I tried to add you to the group by searching that email address, but nothing is showing up. I don't mind if you send me a friend request, just message me who you are. :-)

Hey i'm from California also and did not receive a call. However i do believe this school is a perfect fit for me, so i will defintely apply again. I realize attending this school in January may not be the right time anyways. Attending in the Summer or Fall would be a lot better for me. however do any of you have any tips or advice to make me a better applicant? would you mind sharing your stats? @Kayla3812 @Mcaisley @Kaitlyn2014 @BillyD @canelamayra @ hc-jp @jntsim @ktstt .When i applied i had two pre-reqs left to complete (Stats and Lifespan development) .I plan to become a CNA while i wait for NS, i'm hoping that will give me an edge and a better outlook on the career itself. aswell as experience. Perhaps ill apply for the NP program instead since after all that is my ultimate goal

Hey! @canelamayra for moving I would try different rental websites (like webster properties) or maybe contact the school to see if they have any residential info! I do not recommend going through flower city management though.

Hey @Nurse Tangerine, I'm sorry you haven't heard anything yet - my interviewer said they don't always make phone calls so you might be getting something in the mail soon! I got my bachelors in Biology (neuro/physiology) from UMD and work at Strong Hospital in a lab. I don't have patient contact experience but all my pre-reqs are completed. However, they didn't seem to mind if they aren't completed as long as they will be before the semester starts. I let them know I want to be an NP in the future and they said I can apply to the program after working for 6 months. I was weary about applying to the NP program first because I don't know what I want my focus to be yet and you have to compete with nurses for spots.

I hope this helps!

Hi everyone! I heard back from Admissions this past Friday...got accepted for January 2015! I'm so glad that someone started this thread. I'm eager to start looking for housing. I'm from upstate NY and went to Oswego State for undergrad (not too far from rochester). I hope that you all hear about admissions soon too!

***Is there a facebook group? I've searched as well for "ABPNN January 2015" as well as other combinations and couldn't find anything.

PS as far as housing is concerned... I've been looking at options on a couple sites...rocrooms.com, rochesterstudenthousing.com, and this link http://www.rochester.edu/reslife/offcampus/# on the UofR website. I actually went to rochester recently to check out one of the houses in 19th ward (across the river west of Strong Hospital) but it wasn't for me. The contact person was extremely helpful and not pushy though...nice group to work with. I've also seen a couple houses up for rent (and fewer rooms) on craigslist when I search for "strong" or "white coat." Personally, I think one of the best options is to rent a house as a group and split the cost. Anything reasonable is around 550-650, with other options closer to 700. I'm currently living on Long Island and to me, that is a pretty good deal. Being around NYC makes anything less than 1000/month seem like a steal, and the rooms/houses look pretty nice (i.e. not a dank hole in a wall inhabited by the cockamouse from HIMYM). I've seen the schedule for the program and I want to live as close to strong and the nursing school as I can...so the White Coat or South Wedge neighborhoods for me. As a side note, the 19th Ward area is also okay, but the person I spoke with from rocrooms suggested not to go too far north or west of the area directly across the river from the school. There is a direct relationship between distance from the school and sketchiness factor.

Hi everyone!

Congrats to everyone who got into the spring 2015 ABPNN program! My name is Linda and I just found out on Friday that I got accepted also :) I'm moving from the bay area in California and I am super worried about the move.... can anyone recommend safe areas to live in the Rochester area? Also, I searched for the facebook page and couldn't find it. Can someone please add me? ([email protected]) thanks!

I've changed the group setting from "closed" to "public", so hopefully it will be a little easier for people to find it now. As far as safe neighborhoods, I would steer clear of St Paul street, the Lake Ave area and anytime you hear the words "Avenue A, B, C, D, etc". Some of the safer neighborhoods are NOTA (Neighborhood of the Arts) which includes Park Ave, University Ave, East Ave. Corn Hill is nice too (currently where I live) and it's a straight shot to the school up Mt Hope, about a 10 minute drive.
