Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone! I did not see a thread for this start date, so I decided to start one!

I recently applied and have my interview Wednesday November 11th. I'm pretty excited and can't wait for the interview!

How is everyone else doing with the application process?

I've received my acceptance letter for the bachelors program (didn't apply for the masters), so I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute, regarding the wait-list process esp for the masters. I will bring it up with the school's Director of Admissions and I'll be sure to post what I can.

She did mention to me that the masters program is very restricted, which I interpreted as equaling a small proportion of the total cohort; again, I'll see if I can get specifics. And I think that you are correct in assuming that the advertised c.66-member cohort includes both bachelors and masters, since they are in common classes for the first year.

I know that it's probably not what masters folks want to hear, but a lot of alumni from the bachelor's program work as RN's for a year or two then do the 3-year NP program (it's part-time study, so you work full-time and get a sweet tuition waiver, assuming you work for UR; no debt and full salary, who needs sleep anyway?)

Sorry I couldn't provide more concrete specifics, but (again) I'll be sure to see what I can find out!

Before they come edit your post I need to inform you we are not allowed to use real names of staff or faculty here haha. I actually knew of E.A. prior to her becoming director so I have been in contact with her as well as N.K. throughout my application process. I agree with you when I say they are both extremely sweet, honest and helpful! Like seriously they are very very nice even with so many students constantly contacting them haha.

I applied for the bachelors program FYI, not the masters. As you said I was under the impression that the masters program takes in a ridiculously low number of candidates; I want to say 2 is what I was told when I made a visit to the campus.

Thanks for your speedy response and again any info you can get would make this extra waiting more bearable! Haha

I'm afraid that I have only been able to confirm that each cohort only contains two masters program students. No luck with the waiting list info, but I get the feeling that the deadline for accepted applicants to confirm their enrollment (ie, state their intention to enroll/pay the deposit) is very soon, so hopefully that means that the wait-listed folks for each program should receive final word, soon.

Would you be able to give some more information on the tuition waiver and how much it is compared to the total cost of the Masters program. Additionally, what are the odds that after the ABNN program an individual is hired by UR hospitals and then accepted into the Masters? How long do most people wait to apply for the Masters after completing the ABNN? Thank you for answering these questions!

Quick disclaimer: your best/most up-to-date source of info for the masters program and tuition waiver would be the School itself and UR Human Resources. That said, I do know that as a full-time employee with at least one year of full-time service with UR, you should be be eligible for a 90-95% tuition waiver for up to two classes/semester (see Tuition Benefits :: University of Rochester and http://www.rochester.edu/working/hr/benefits/tuition/EE_TuitionWaiverBenefit.pdf ). As to how that would apply to the masters tuition, see School of Nursing Schedule of Charges : Office of the Bursar :: University of Rochester and http://www.rochester.edu/adminfinance/bursar/PDFs/NursingFees2015-16.pdf for the current fees; see https://son.rochester.edu/programs/nurse-practitioner/nurse-practitioner-masters.html for credit hours for masters programs (seem to be 45-55).

Regarding the transition to the masters program, I can only give my impression, so nothing concrete/statistical, I'm afraid. It seems like a good number of APBNN graduates tend to: A) land jobs within UR's extended health care system (makes sense, since they are already trained with general UR SOP's, have done their clinicals at potential job sites, and have connections via School instructors) and B) get into UR's grad programs (since the School/professors already know them and UR has an incentive to hold onto high-potential NP's). Many of the masters folks I have talked to have started NP programs within two years of graduating ABPNN (UR master programs seem to require a minimum of one year of full-time relevant clinical work: https://son.rochester.edu/programs/nurse-practitioner/nurse-practitioner-masters.html ), but I get the sense that it really depends on the applicant.

Afraid that I can only provide my own perspective; good news is that there are many more details for the NP programs at the School's website and UR's Human Resources page. I do know that, once you work full-time at UR for one year, you are eligible for a 90-95% tuition waiver (it seems as though the NP programs require a min of one year clinical work anyway, so works out).

It does seem as though many ABPNN grads are accepted into the School's masters programs, which makes sense as the School/UR knows them and has an incentive to keep highly-qualified/motivated alums in-house, esp since they are already familiar with the School.

Any word yet???

Nothing... Emailed NK to make sure she got my form; she said she received it. :/

Knightwhosaysni Do you happen to have any insight as to when they are going to start down the list? This wait is killing me :(
