Thought I would start a thread for those who are applying for January Cohort.
My advice to everyone is don't stress out about everything. And so far Don't Buy all the books...I rarely use them. You will need to buy 1 book new because you use it for online quizzes and it has the code you need. but all my other books are older editions...Also, in my opinion the work is not overly difficult so far, but it requires a good amount of time in order to be prepared for the test. In our cohort there are a lot of people who have families kids etc..me included. Just set the expectations up front and be honest. I personally can't get work done at the house so I am not a home as often...but I still see my wife and kids everyday and feel like I am around enough...My suggestion for those of you who have families.is to take lab B...it is the later lab and you have 3+ hours after class and before Lab B that is essentially built in study time...
I'll be coming up to the Rochester area this Sat, Sun, Mon (Oct 5,6,7) to take a look at the area. Would be interested in meeting up with any students currently in the program. Email me at [email protected]
There is a class dedicated to job search strategies and interviewing tips. There is also a "meet the recruiter" event where you can meet with potential employers in the area! There are also tons of interviewing, resume, and cover letter workshops throughout the year. There was even a workshop on Skype interviews!
One thing I wish I would have known coming in, is that i should start studying for the Nclex during the program. I basically waited until after graduation to start studying, and it was tough! I would suggest buying Nclex prep books such as Pearson's Comprehensive Nclex Review and Lippincott's Q&A to help you study when taking Peds, OB, Psych and Med Surg. I passed my first try, but I still wished I had prepped earlier.
Hi everyone!
My name is Dani and I'll be starting the nursing program at the SON in January too and am beyond excited. I am currently completing my B.A at the University of Rochester. I'm from the Rochester area originally and currently live in the downtown area, so if you have any questions just let me know! My mom is a nurse at Strong and I currently work as a Patient Care Technician at Highland Hospital (part of URMC) so I am very familiar with the U of R/ URMC . I am looking forward to meeting everyone and starting on this new adventure!

I think your car would be fine, a good set of snow tires would be well worth the money. I drive a sedan as well but I have never had a problem. My suggestion (if you're worried) is to look at Rochester Student housing websites that offer shared housing OR rent an apartment within walking distance to the hospital, aka. the White Coat Ghetto (many doctors and nurses live there). The 19th Ward is also an option but is less safe than WCG.
Most clinicals, from what i have heard, are at Strong Memorial Hospital aka University of Rochester Medical Center, it's affiliate Highland Hospital (
I'm sure both schools offer great options and good luck making your decision! Hope to see you in January.
