Is there anyone that is familiar with the accelerated Bsn program at UM? Also, if anyone has applied or been accepted, please post.

The summer session runs the full 10 weeks. Classes are considered summer I and summer II. Final exams are considered the HESI ( i didn't have a HESI for pathophysiology or for research) and they are given during the final week schedule. My final in patho was a comprehensive exam, and my final in research was a paper. Final exams are held in the Nursing Building, and during the time stated on the syllabus. I don't think they follow the university schedule, but I have also been too lazy to look it up. Last term, my peds HESI was on a saturday while the other HESI's were on the previous wednesday and then the following wednesday. For the combined classes (peds/OB and Psych/comm) there will be a HESI for each section (1 for peds, and 1 for OB).

How did you prepare for them? Are there HESI study manuals to help you or did you just use the course material

They provided us with a HESI book free of charge. HESI is made by evolve/elsevier and most of the nursing books used are from the publisher evolve/elsevier/mosby because they provide the pre-made powerpoint lectures as well as the testbanks to accompany them. It's like a big monopoly within nursing schools. You are lucky if the teachers pre-read their exam/quizzes to check for mistakes. I had never heard of this before nursing school- but i guess it's common. That's why UM was close to losing their accreditation in 2007 because students got their hands on these materials. I hope since then teachers have smartened up and pull their questions from a variety of sources.

I got accepted into UM's ABSN for Fall 2009:nurse: and I wanted to take the time and thank all of you for all the helpful information...you have answered soooooo many of my questions & concerns. Hope to see u future Canes around! :yeah:

I've been accepted for August 2009 - is anyone else in that class? Thanks for letting us know about the competition for the scholarships and the difficulty level of the classes.

I'm teetering as to whether I'm going to go the UM or (seriously) Miami Dade for a simple RN. The cost makes it a difficult question in this economy... any input?

Ive seen people asking about books, look up the um bookstore and ask them what books they have for whatever class you have to take. First semester accelerated students are gonna take patho, pharm, assesment, and adult health 1 so they could figure it out that way.

As for MDC, its a great school and the comp to get in is pretty high. They have clinicals in the same spots we do (Jackson, baptist, south miami, Im guessing synai and UMH too) so they get great clinical experience. Problem is they only get a ADN. So they take nearly the same prereqs then do 4 semester but get only a ADN. Seems like UM is a better deal when you do same prereqs then 4 semesters and get your BSN. If ADN people want to move up the ladder their gonna have to do RN to BSN programs and such that im sure are no fun and arent free. I know from talking to MDC students that they loose alot of their classmates too, so im guessing its every bit as rigorous as UM has become.

I would check out FIU and see what their prices are. I dont see as many of those students at jackson but do see them from time to time. Maybe their clinicals arent as good or they dont have as many students, not sure.

I pretty much summed up my experience so far in the bsn accelerated at UM in your other thread. I started last may and have completed 2 of the 3 semesters. We are awaiting our final semester that begins jan 21 or whatever. I remember seeing the guys that graduated last may on our first few days of class as they took a nclex review or something. If I pass everything this semester I will be one of those people you see. I say "if" because this program is hard, very hard and requires extreme dedication. I have around a 3.3 GPA so far but had a 4.0 in the prereqs and a undergrad of 3.3. I did not try very hard in undergrad or even that hard in the prereqs but have tried my hardest in this program and still only manage a 3.3 (which isnt that bad but still). I already explained that we started with 70 and around 45 made it to second semester. We also lost a few more in this last semester.

Ill tell you about the scholarship cause it ****** some students off. First off the scholarship at UM was only given to 17 or so students out of the 48 that finished the application process in time. Some students were mad about that because they felt it should of been better stated that everyone doesnt automatically get a slot. If you plan on applying make sure you get all your documents in order and have them ready for the first day of class in may. They did interviews the first day and again a couple weeks later. Some of my friends never got an interview because the scholarship lady never ansers emails or calls and they didnt know what to do. Some of the people that didnt get it told the interview panel they wanted to be icu nurses and crna or whatever and had bad success.

Powerpoints and notes and books and practice questions works for me. In pharm you may be allowed to use a cheat sheet for the exams (they make you hand write it). Make sure you write small and get all important info from power points on cheat sheet, especially if you have ms. K, she likes the pp.

If you have any other questions ask away!

Nice read. thanks! I am coming in in May.

One question: Please give me as much of the book ISBNs/ book titles as possible. I need to get the books soon before I arrive. Thanks in advance!

Hey Everyone,

I am an UM hopeful. What kinds of GPA's did everyone who got in have for the ABSN is you care to share? Just trying to guage where I am.

My overall GPA is 3.3ish, and my pre-req GPA is 3.91

I was looking at MDC as well and they have a new BSN nursing degree program that they offer that started I think September 2008...if you already live in Florida, you are lucky because tuition is pretty cheap for residents...I'm considering relocating and establishing residency for the low tuition and a stab at the MDC BSN program...

Okay, I take this back...the MDC BSN is only for R.N.'s ....not for second degree students---I guess I'm seeing things the way that I'd like them to be in my haste....
