Has anyone applied to UHV Second Degree BSN program for Spring 2012?
IDK what the deal is. I'm getting frustrated now.
@virginiadawn2, I'd get them started now. If you plan on getting into some type of Nursing program in the near future, it would be wise to get the process started anyway. The email that was sent out did not have "Vaccinations" on the list as a requirement for entrance to the interview. However, on uhv.edu's checklist, Vaccinations are required before acceptance to the interview. Maybe the process has changed since last year, or the website has not been updated. Who knows. What I do know is that the HEP B vac. takes 6 months to complete!
@JoEPen- I didn't get a confirmation email either.
I was on the Texas Board of Nursing website reviewing the success rate of students who passed NCLEX & the statistics for UHV were appalling. I'm aware that this a new school and the quantity is not going to be great. Out of 7 candidates 2 passed which was 28.57% (the lowest percent of any accredited nursing program in TX).
Now, I have questions. Why was it only 7 people taking the exam in this one year time frame from Oct 2009-2010? What happened to the rest of students? Why did that select few fail? Can anyone shed some light please? I'm scared now after looking at the numbers.
That we be messed up that I graduate in a year doing the accelerated track and can't pass my board.
I had the same reservations about the program when I was researching choices in the Houston area, but it IS a relatively brand-new program with the same CCNE accreditation. Perhaps the students were ill-prepared for the pace of the program or elected to not take the exam, thereby lowering the average?
However, when I take into consideration the cost and convenience of attending nursing school (already have enough debt from undergrad!), not to mention how much more quickly I'd be eligible for employment, I'm really hopeful for entrance into UHV.
You know, I was worried about that too. I was very hesitant at even appling to the program. I'm with hkc713, the convenience that this school gives me is well worth it. I just know that I will have NO SOCIAL LIFE WHAT SO EVER!
I like to be optimistic about everything I do in life, so i'm gonna say that there were only 7 people taking the NCLEX because the other 43 were not ready, so they are STILL studying for it. 5 of them had family issues and couldn't finish the program, and the last 5 just couldn't hack it out, so they dropped out. :)
The program is going to be rough, so we have to do our best, WHEN WE GET ACCEPTED, to stay on top of our studies. I try not to blame that number on the school, but rather the students. We don't know what their situation was, but I'm sure that they were told from the very beginning that this program was no joke.
Also,
Can some of you tell me what you all are doing for financial aide?? I'm getting conflicting stories and scholarships and loans. People are telling me that because I already have a degree I'm not eligible for any type of assistance. Is that true??
Hello all - Just to let you know for those who are worried about the NCLEX passing rate. I too was worried about the same thing prior to deciding to go with UHV for the Second Degree program. Apparently, the TX BON website only updated the site from those who first took the NCLEX in December 09 -January 10. So that is why the passing rate appears to be so LOW. BUT for all of the other 40+ students who took the NCLEX it did not appear on the BON website.
I know it's strange, but as a student currently in the program I will tell you that it is FAST, accelerated and you will have to be able to organize and prioritize your entire life. BUT I wouldn't change my mind now. Yes, I did miss out on a few family functions, friends birthdays and long summer breaks. But I will be done in 4 weeks and will be taking the NCLEX in early January. Alot of the students have been interviewing for jobs already and we already have 3 students who have jobs!
So...just my two cents. YES it is hard. But I would have to say any nursing program will be difficult. Be prepared for the ride, but I have made so many friends and wonderful relationships with faculty who are extremely supportive.
I will be happy to answer any questions you all may have and hope to see you at the interview! (I'm volunteering that day)
