university of detroit mercy second degree program

U.S.A. Michigan

I am thinking about going to Mercy's accelerated second degree program but I hear they lose many people during the year due to grades. Is that true? Is it too fast and should I consider a 2 year program? I am a good student but I'd hate to spend all that money then not make it as they don't allow anyone to retake a class so I hear as other schools do. I am open to all feedback. Thank you.

I heard there were 432 applicants, but you have to keep in mind that some of the applicants roll over from previously applying. I am finishing up my last pre-req which is Organic Chem and hope to get the books for the program asap to try and get a jump on reading in the fall since I won't be taking a class.

Angie, yes, I'm from MI. My first degree is from Ferris State and I was looking at a couple of programs, but then it was getting too difficult to complete all the pre-reqs for every school, so my husband and I decided I needed to make a decision....even though UDM is expensive, I like the placement rate, plus there are many options for paying off a student loan once you graduate.

If you would like to email me so maybe we can touch base before the program here is my email address [email protected] :)

Congrats on getting accepted!!

Hi! How long after applying did you receive your accepetance letter? I just applied to the school and was wondering how long it would take to hear something? I have been accepted into a Graduate Entry program in Ohio, but would like to start with the BSN program. Thanks and Congrats!

I don't know.

Hi Everyone -

I applied on July 11 for the SDO at UDM. Received my transcript evaluation today, I need two courses... sent the adviser my plan for completing them, and now I'm just waiting. What I want to know is, those of you who had pre-reqs to complete and were accepted "pending completion" of them, did you find out if you got in before you registered to take those courses?

Also, do they even send you an acceptance pending completion of those courses?

Thanks!

Yes, I had one class to complete and I was accepted before I registered for the class.

Ok, thank you! How long did it take before you received your acceptance? I've been back and forth with the adviser regarding classes and my evaluation (poor woman is probably so sick of me!) but the only thing I have received in the mail is the first letter about completing my admission file. She okayed my my "plan" for completion but will I get a formal letter of admission if I get in? Is there a chance still that I could be denied admission?

I'm not sure how this works...

Call UDM and ask. They would know the answer to that.

How long did it take before I received my acceptance? When I applied I had 4 pre-reqs to complete. Once I completed 3 of those 4, I was accepted for the next cohort (Jan 2012).

You will receive a formal acceptance letter if you are admitted. If the current cohort fills up and you did not get accepted to it, she will bump your file to the next cohort. You need some many pre-reqs completed before you can be evaulated for admission, I think it is 4 pre-reqs.

Is there still a chance you can be denied admission? I think anyone can be denied admission at any time, IMO. But I don't think UDM will deny admission until you have completed all the pre-reqs. I would imagine your GPA has to be real low to be denied...like 3.0 or something.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I was hoping to get into the Jan 2012 cohort as well, I have one pre-req that wasn't offered at Wayne State (where I received my bachelors) the health ethics, but I was able to find somewhere to take it this fall and the adviser told me if it was to be completed by January I can be considered... so I guess we'll see now.

Thanks for all your help!

FYI, I took my healthcare ethics out of state. Good luck.

FYI, I took my healthcare ethics at Wayne State University. PHI 1110 is the class. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up! I remember seeing it several times but I was in healthpro start as a pre-pharm and I had a healthcare seminar course each semester that always interfered so I didn't have room for it, but when I switched majors and finally did, it wasn't offered that semester so I just too phi 1010. Anyway, I was able to find an online one from wcc so I figured that would be my best bet so I can work full time and save some money... If I do get in I know I won't have too much time for that with the heavy schedule!

I begin the 2nd degree program at U of D in Jan 2012 and was wondering how you felt so far. I am also very nervous as I have read mixed reviews about the 2nd degree program and the instructors at U of D. How was the nursing assessment test and the medical math exam that was given in the first few weeks? I know you must be swamped an appreciate any feedback or advice you have time to give. Thank you.

I am attending U of D Mercys accelerated nursing program that begins in May 2011. Does anyone have any preparation suggestions??? I start in 3 months and am SUPER nervous.

Yes, I agree that it is important to really sit down and think about what type of program is right for each individual. UDM is extremely expensive, and I am very fortunate to have parents willing to help me with the loan process and living costs. Without their help there is no way I would be able to complete such a program.

Of course it is terrifying to know that you will get no second chances in the program, and the thought of wasting that much money makes me sick! But it is a risk I'm willing to take to get my nursing education completed. I had applied to another school for August 2010 start and was declined, so I personally cannot afford to wait for acceptances (or rejections) to schools that have about 500 qualified people applying for maybe 50 spots. We all know that nursing school is competitive and expensive in general and therefore we are all taking huge risks in our search for further education.

Luckily there are a lot of different options in the area and each person has a chance to evaluate where they feel is their best fit. I think everyone who comments on these threads has great potential to become nurse, and I hope everyone is able to find a nursing school path that fits their own financial, family, and personal needs.:redbeathe

I was wondering of you went through the program at U of D Mercy and if you had any feedback on your experience thus far.
