University of Detroit Mercy 2nd Degree App Questions

Published

Hi everyone, I'm applying to UDM's second degree option. I have some questions about the application that I was wondering if those of you who have been accepted can help me with:

1) How long was your essay? There appears to only be one essay question in the application, which is in regards to my educational goals. The application says the answer can be up to 32,000 characters long. 32,000 characters sounds really long. Obviously, it should be quality over quantity, but I just wanted an idea of how long most people's essays were.

2) How long after submitting your application were you asked to submit transcripts?

3) How long after submitting your application did you hear about whether you got accepted or not (I'm applying for the January 2011 cohort)?

Thanks in advance for any help!

1) I honestly don't remember exactly how long my essay was, but I don't think it was more than a few pages long. Maybe around 700 words? Definitely not 32,000 characters though, as you're right, that would be really long!!

2) You don't need to wait for them to ask you to send transcripts. I mean, they might remind you if you don't do it, but you should just go ahead and send your transcripts as soon as you can. For me, I sent the transcripts for the classes that I was finished with right away, but then I still had some prereqs to finish, so I sent those transcripts later. Make sure to send them early because your application won't be complete without them!

3) Again, I don't remember this exactly, but I think it took a couple months after I submitted my application to hear that I was accepted.

Sorry I don't have more specific info for you, I applied and heard back a while ago so I don't remember the details very well!!

Thanks for they reply!! I requested all my transcripts be sent yesterday and should be finished with the application today. Thanks again!

Good luck with your application :-)

I don't remember writing an essay? I sent transcripts right away and they sent back a checklist of courses that I needed to complete. Also, I was able to DANTE or CLEP test out of a few prereqs, so that might save you some money and time:) I think they look at your application when you have fewer than 4 courses to complete and most of the sciences done. I applied in December (after grades posted) and heard back in January. I'm starting this May! Good luck!

Oh wow, UDMABSN! You heard back after a month? That's great! Thanks for the reply. Do you mind me asking which prereqs you were able to test out of?

I'm completing microbio and nutrition this semester and will have only ethics and biochem left, which I'll be taking in the Fall. I'm hoping to get accepted to the Jan 2011 cohort.

Good luck in May!!

Hi There!!!

Currently have 3 wks left @ UDM :). I didn't have to do an essay, but there admissions process is very unique. Once you apply you have an admission counselor that keeps you on track with your pre-reqs and basically tries to get in into the program. Their admission is on a 1st come 1st serve basis, so apply as early as need be. Many people wait until they finish all of their classes, then they apply. But, the advisor can place you into a specific cohort contingent upon the completion of your courses. UDM doesn't have an application deadline, your are competing if you wait until the last minute. Don't know how much this has changed with the rise of people entering into the nursing program, but thats the way it was when I entered into the program (ABSN). UDM is a great school! (expensive :( Best of Luck:)

I tested out of ethics and developmental psych with CLEP and DANTE. You can also test out of Academic Writing, Algebra, Intro to Psych, and Sociology, but I had those. I think you could test out of two sciences too (A&P and Micro, I think, it's been awhile). It did not say you could test out of the sciences on my evaluation but I found it somewhere on the site and asked about it. I think you have to do the science tests on certain dates at U of D. CLEP and DANTE you can take any time, at a lot of different places. Good Luck!

Thanks purpleRN2B and UDMABSN! I submitted my application and the school has already received some of my transcripts. I really hope I get in!! I was able to visit the school during a weekend, but haven't attended an info session yet because I don't currently live in MI. Would any of you mind telling me what the schedule is like for each semester (how many days you attend class vs. clinicals)?

Our first semester class is Mon-Weds days, clinicals are Thurs and Fri days or evenings (you can't choose) or maybe a weekend day. Second semester clinicals are 3 days. I think by the end you do clinicals every day for a couple weeks, but not positive.
