University of Calgary January 2024

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi everyone! I've applied for the University of Calgary 2024 degree holders program at the beginning of July. I figured I'd make a new thread for applicants so we can all be anxious together haha ? I'm hoping so badly to hear back soon!

Hey congrats on getting accepted! I'm in the same boat as I'm not from Calgary but I've been using the Off-Campus Housing Guide to get a better idea. I'll link it here:  https://www.ucalgary.ca/live-uc-ucalgary-site/sites/default/files/teams/69/ISS OffCampus Housing.pdf

It seems like along the C Train line is good as it's quick access to the university and from my talk with an advisor it depends on the Term how much time you're spending in clinical placement vs class. I think the first few terms are more in class with placements being during daytime hours vs.  final placement could be any hours as you follow the same shift as your preceptor.

That being said, would be great to get some insight from current students as my info is all just from my research online and talking with an advisor for like 10 mins haha

Ahh thanks for this info -- super appreciated! I posted in the 2023 thread as well but not sure if anyone will see that. I wonder if there is a facebook group of current/previous nursing students or anything like that. I wasn't able to find one in my brief search... but I might have been searching weird names. If anyone finds one and could post it here that would be sweet. :)

No worries at all! If you find any groups let me know ? I tried searching facebook too but no luck!

Hello guys! Congrats to everyone who has gotten in so far. Has anyone been accepted with a GPA less than 3.9?

I got in on September 5th with a 3.84-3.89, if I calculated mine correctly.

Does anyone what the next steps after paying the deposit is? I know it's still a while until the semester but I'm kind of overly anxious and haven't really received any communication from UofC since then.

I emailed them last week wondering the same thing - they said they'll start registering us for classes & sending out more info hopefully near the end of October!

Oh so they do all the registration for us? I did get the standard welcome letter in the mail from UofC but it didn't have any specific information.

Also will transfer and after degree students technically be with second year direct entry (HS) students? I've kind of had trouble understanding the calendar/schedule that's available. I'm so nervous already, first time going into a program where I won't have a friend or someone I already know with me ?

I've been trying to figure it all out too! It sounds like if you got accepted in early September that's super early and they don't have everything all arranged properly until closer to the end of October.

I asked an advisor if we would be in classes with the second year direct entry students but she made it sound like it was separate. I could be wrong but she said that our cohort would be all together. Don't quote me on that though!

I hear you on being nervous though - I'll also be moving solo to Calgary and don't know anyone but I'm sure it will all be okay once we get started! Right now I'm just trying to work out housing so if anyone has any good leads let me know!

Hi Everyone,

I've got my fingers and toes cross for all of us! ??

For everyone who has heard back, when did you have your transcripts submitted? Mine were in before the Sept 15th deadline, but they weren't in before applications closed. Just wondering to see if the review is based on when the transcripts were received. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know what date the semester starts? I read on the website that UCalgary Winter term starts Jan 2nd but I'm wondering if our start date would be different as a cohort program.

The semester technical starts the 2nd but that's for block week courses (which you won't be in). Nursing classes syst January 8th.

Oh that is super helpful, thank you! I have no idea what block week courses are but that's great to hear that we are excluded! ?

Sorry about all the typos last post ? I'm glad it was at least kind of clear what I was talking about...

Block week is where some students can take a course in a week at the start of term for partial credit. So people with take a block week history course, for example, and it will count towards half of a regular course, so they can maybe take fewer courses a semester or get ahead. As far as I know there are no block week nursing courses. And anyways with the accelerated program we would have a set schedule.
