Hello, future nurses!
I'm a current U of C student who applied through the degree holder route. I'll be graduating at the end of this year. Please feel free to post any questions here!
Another round of applications is starting soon for the January 2019 intake of Transfer and/or Degree Holder students. Here's the U of C page for their info:
One of the most common questions is whether the courses you have taken meet the faculty's pre-requisites. The best way to be sure is to email a screenshot of your transcript to [email protected] and ask if you are missing anything.
Important note! As of 2019, the faculty is changing the schedule for the summer terms.
"We will compress all courses in Term 4 and Term 7 to be offered over a 9-week period from late April to the end of June. The result would be an intense spring term, but students would have no scheduled nursing courses during July and August."
While having 2 months off sounds great for some, it causes trouble for others (student loans, jobs, child care etc.). Please be aware of this change before applying.
Best of luck!
Hi all. I applied back in July and I'm finishing up my final prereq (BIOL 235) at Athabasca University. My final exam is scheduled for August 26 2018. My GPA as of now is 3.84 but I'm a little bit stressed about BIOL 235, I'm doing it in under 2 months so it is a lot of content to absorb.
@Glowree, did you email the nursing department about doing the final in September? As far as I recall, they said I had to have the coursework for all the prerequisite courses done before August 31, which is why I'm rushing through Anatomy and Physiology.
Where did you guys do Anatomy and Physiology?
Hi all. I was just wondering what the average GPA was last year? After emailing the nursing department I currently sit at a 3.84 however I'm doing BIOL 235 at Athabasca (compressing it into under two months due to some time constraints) so I'm averaging a B which would lower my GPA closer to the 3.5-3.6 range. Any insight into the lower end GPAs accepted last year?
Also, my final for Athabasca is on August 26 2018. Anyone know how long it normally takes them to submit the grades to University of Calgary? I know I have until September 30 to get them but I'd be moving across country for this (we'll be driving) so the earlier I know, the better it is for me.
Hi Malubaby
They don't release the GPA, but the minimum cutoff seems to be around the 3.5 range based on the people who got admitted.
The second question is a bit tricky and I've gotten mixed answers from U of C. They want you to finish all requirements by the Aug 31st deadline, but Athabasca takes time to release your final course grade (took 12 days for me, and I was rushing them). That being said, there is no "course completion date" on the Athabasca transcript, so there's no way to prove when you officially finished the course anyway.... U of C requests transcripts from Athabasca through Apply Alberta, so my feeling is that, as long as they can get the transcript when they request it, you will be ok.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful on the answers! Hope your application goes smoothly.
No worries! I figured it would be a long shot. I'm really hoping to stay in the 3.7 (if I get a B+ I'll be in the 3.7 range) which is more likely for entry.
When I spoke with my Athabasca instructor he let me know it would take about 3 business days to get the final exam grades up after submission. I know they take about 8 business days to mark assignments so I plan on getting the third assignment submitted end of this week and the third quiz done end of this week as well. Speaking with UofC, they said they needed the transcripts by September 30 so I'm assuming that should be sufficient.
