Hello, future nurses!

I'm a current U of C student who applied through the degree holder route. I'll be graduating at the end of this year. Please feel free to post any questions here!

Another round of applications is starting soon for the January 2019 intake of Transfer and/or Degree Holder students. Here's the U of C page for their info:

Degree Holder

One of the most common questions is whether the courses you have taken meet the faculty's pre-requisites. The best way to be sure is to email a screenshot of your transcript to [email protected] and ask if you are missing anything.

Important note! As of 2019, the faculty is changing the schedule for the summer terms.

"We will compress all courses in Term 4 and Term 7 to be offered over a 9-week period from late April to the end of June. The result would be an intense spring term, but students would have no scheduled nursing courses during July and August."

While having 2 months off sounds great for some, it causes trouble for others (student loans, jobs, child care etc.). Please be aware of this change before applying.

Best of luck!

Yup. Received my admission package. A LOT to sort out before the 7th of December.

Hey, I'm applying for the transfer route for fall 2019 and I'm not too sure how gpa's work. Does anyone mind telling me the letter grades they got in the 10 classes to get a 3.6+? Thanks so much!

just got my package today in the post. Quite a lot to do before December 7th. No time to waste so starting off immediately.

good luck everyone and see you in January.

Hi Glowree,

Thank you for the above info. I am also planning to apply for the degree holder route Jan 2020. I read I think somewhere in the last 2 pages a response from the University where it says 5 compulsory prerequisites and 5 most recently taken courses.

My previous degree is in Physics which was 2007. Will any previous course from 2007 be useful for this admission? Could you kindly let me know all the courses I need to take from Athabasca please?

Thank you.

Hi Kenobi,

Thank you for all your help so far. I am a bit worried about something.

I have a 4 year old son, how easy/tough will the program be for me? A friend advised I go for the 4 year degree but it's such a long time. Did you have a lot of students with children in your class? How did they cope?

Thanks.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Generally speaking, most universities will not accept credits more than 5 to 7 years in the past.

I went through nursing school with 3 children, one of whom is medically fragile. It wasn't easy, and it won't be easy for you. There is a lot of reading, papers to write, clinical days to arrange for and exams to complete. Be prepared to be physically and psychologically exhausted for the next half-dozen years.

Hi Tito, as per your previous credits, the faculty website states that it doesn't matter when you completed them.

Courses from Athabasca that would work: Eng 255, Psyc 228, Math 215, and of course Biol 235.

Hi Tito!

A lot of people in my year (degree holders) have children. I can already count 7 off the top of my head without trying very hard... some of them have multiple kids. There are also those who work during school! Nursing school is demanding regardless of whether you have children or not, but it's certainly possible to succeed in the program with a bit of work. I would not recommend the 4 year degree since that's not any easier... you just get summer breaks. It's a personal choice, but I prefer to take less breaks and just get it over with!

Hi Kenobi, whats Block Week all about? And is it necessary to be in school that first week of January for it? (Jan 2-8).

Thank you so much Kenobi. You have a way with words that puts one at ease. Your input is appreciated.

would an A+,A,A-,B+,B+ be above a 3.6 gpa?
