Hello, future nurses!

I'm a current U of C student who applied through the degree holder route. I'll be graduating at the end of this year. Please feel free to post any questions here!

Another round of applications is starting soon for the January 2019 intake of Transfer and/or Degree Holder students. Here's the U of C page for their info:

One of the most common questions is whether the courses you have taken meet the faculty's pre-requisites. The best way to be sure is to email a screenshot of your transcript to [email protected] and ask if you are missing anything.

Important note! As of 2019, the faculty is changing the schedule for the summer terms.

"We will compress all courses in Term 4 and Term 7 to be offered over a 9-week period from late April to the end of June. The result would be an intense spring term, but students would have no scheduled nursing courses during July and August."

While having 2 months off sounds great for some, it causes trouble for others (student loans, jobs, child care etc.). Please be aware of this change before applying.

Best of luck!

would an A+,A,A-,B+,B+ be above a 3.6 gpa?

You're at a 3.66 for those 5 grades, but they look at 10 grades. The five required courses, plus five of your most recent transferrable courses.

A+/A - 4.0

A- - 3.7

B+ - 3.3

B - 3.0

B- - 2.7

etc...

Hi Kenobi, whats Block Week all about? And is it necessary to be in school that first week of January for it? (Jan 2-8).

Hi Glowree!

Block week is for some courses that can be "fast-tracked" and completed in a single week. You won't need to worry about that for the first term since none of the nursing course apply.

It's technically not necessary to be in school the first week. There is a welcome event with some info and where you get to meet your peers... but it doesn't count towards hours as far as I know.

Thank you so much Kenobi. You have a way with words that puts one at ease. Your input is appreciated.

Thank you so much Tito!

If anyone here (or lurkers) feel like they benefited from the thread, please continue to support one another and future nurses by making a new thread during the next intake! It's been two years since I entered the program, and this program changes very quickly. I'll also be graduating in a month (time flew). You guys/gals will be the experts on the new requirements and program structure, so please share your knowledge with future students :)

Hi Kenobi,

I have been following this thread for a while now and learned so much from you. I know time flies so fast and congrats in advance. I'm hoping to apply for January 2020. I'm just wondering what the job prospects is like in Alberta. Do you guys get an offer of employment immediately after school or what have you heard from your peers as regards employment. Thank you and I wish you all the best.

Ps: I'll appreciate if you come by to check up on us every ones in a while.

Thank you so much Tito!

Hi Ogonda,

I'm glad you found the info helpful! Thanks for the advance congrats =)

Job prospects are so-so right now and depends on the practice area. According to my peers in mental health, they are getting job offers after graduation. The med/surg unit I'm on is also hinting that I'll be able to work there afterwards (wish it were confirmed). Things seem a bit dicey in pediatrics, as I know a couple people who said their unit is not hiring at all. One person I know in occupational health will be working for the private company he did his final practicum with. Seasoned nurses I spoke to say that the healthcare field is cyclical and right now it's in a bit of a slump in Alberta, but things always get better!

Thanks for the information I truly appreciate

Thank you so much Tito!

Thanks Kenobi. You have sure been of great help. Funny, thing to say, but I believe I don't speak for myself alone when I say we will miss your input here. Congratulations in advance on your graduation and more blessings to your path as you progress in your career. Cheers!

Hello Tito

Hi zzed

Hi Ogonda,

I also plan to start in January 2020. Let's stay in touch pls!

Hi everyone! School is starting in a few weeks for you guys!

Just wanted to offer a bit of good news and encouragement. I finished my degree early December and was hired a week later. Five out of the six people I hang out with regularly already landed jobs as well (all at major hospitals in Calgary). I know that the message boards can appear discouraging at times, but there are certainly jobs available for new grads! U of C also does resume/interview prep for students in the final term, so everyone will be ready to go by the time they graduate.

Hope you all have a wonderful beginning to your degree/career!
