Hey guys! Thought I would start this thread now for anyone applying to UofA’s CRNA program. I started my application this week and am just waiting for my references to submit their part. Let me know if you’re applying ?
Since applications just closed on 9/15 the review process is still early. This year there were a record number of applicants. The first step is validation of all submitted documentation by the graduate college before the individual applications are seen by faculty. Most of these documents are just facts about the applicants experience and performance in the past. The scoring of these factors are done, but hidden from the program admission committee. When the faculty first get their review assignment they can only see the essay portion of your application. This is the part that is the most subjective, but where we get to know the applicant the most as a person. Writing style and form is also important as doctoral training goes well beyond providing a safe anesthetic. One must also be able to clearly articulate ideas in written form. Faculty do not have access yet to the demographic information that might otherwise color/bias their opinion of the applicant. Your story is your story. It is not a story paired with a GPA on a transcript obtained from a faculty member's favorite school. After all essays have been reviewed, 30% of each reviewing faculty's application assignment is given blindly to a second reviewer. The scores assigned must be within 10%, otherwise a third review will be utilized. This ensures inter-rater reliability. Only after this process is complete does the full application open for the review committee. The essay scores (subjective) and the factual demographic scores (objective) are combined and the true discussion begins. GPA is a factor but not a primary one. The applicant as a whole is more important. It takes time but the system has yielded good results. Good luck everyone!!
Hey everyone! Jumping on this thread, I applied to this school as well and I’ve been in contact with the liaison, hoping to get an invitation! Does anyone know for sure how many applicants they admit? Best of luck to everyone!
