All I know is that they definitely don't accept FAFSA.

All I know is that they definitely don't accept FAFSA.

Why would a college NOT accept federal financial aid? Why would the federal government not give aid to a college?? This seems strange......

I don't know the reason why, but I believe you can only use federal loans for community colleges and 4-year schools. The only nursing program outside of these that can use FAFSA is Western Career College (at least in the SF Bay Area). Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok I will correct you...LOL Actually the reason I thought it so strange that Unitek does not have government funding is because MOST colleges on the vocational/technical level DO in fact have FAFSA. I used to do financial aid for a college here in Phoenix. I do not know of ANY schools here in AZ whether they be 4-year or community colleges along with the technical schools that do NOT offer government funding. The only one I know of are a few beauty schools. And isn't Unitek quite pricey??? How do they justify it? I don't get how the LPN programs in Cali. are so incredibly expensive. My program is less than $8K for a 12 month program.....they also offer government loans. I think these schools are "cashing in " on the nursing shortage problem....It's rediculous!!!

Interesting. This must be a California thing then. I've visited a few private schools and the first thing they want to do is make sure you can get approved for the private loan. If they were using FAFSA, it's unlikely you would be denied. The admissions rep at Gurnick (I'll be attending in September) said he's had 43 people apply for a loan through SLM and only 20 were approved.

I'm not sure what the deal is out there? Here we have 2 fairly new R.N programs offered through technical schools. They cost around $30K and they do have FAFSA. You can also apply for funding through various private funders ie, banks, sallie mae and whatnot. I'm sure this school you are going to attend see alot of denial because in order to get a private loan you must have stellar credit. Most people do not. Even decent credit may get you turned down. Being the the average credit score is 650....that is probably NOT high enough for these types of loans. I't got to be frustrating. That's why I say move to AZ get into one of these $7000 dollar LPN programs and move back to cali when you are done. Even the cost of living will be cheaper(unless yo live at home)

I mean why do these schools charge so much in CA???

I'm ashamed to say so but it is the truth: IN CALIFORNIA MOST LVN SCHOOLS ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY. Why else would they be charging us nothing less than 21k. Honestly, its ridiculous. I'm only doing it because its 12 months and I really want to become a nurse from the bottom of heart.

I'm interested in the LVN program you speak of SassieBaz, can I get some info on it?

BTW- Thanks everyone!
