I really respect you who are in the nursing field. To the point that I will be giving up a career in overseas education to return to the States and join your ranks.
The thread on " Should Foreign Nurses work in the US" brought something to light for me. The problem is not the fileld of nursing but the conditions that nurses work under which causes nurses to leave the field.
Someone mentioned that hospital lobbies keep conditions as they are. IF this is the case if all nurses made a concerted effort to change things with all those numbers could we not get someone to hear you?
What if every nurse wrote to their congressman, senator, representive, govenor, the president, the GOP and the democrats? Not only write but write A LOT. Every day or week etc... and just keep writing bombarding their office with request for change.
Bug them to death. Annoy them to the point where they will assist you.
We live in a country where we can take actions that will affect our welfare.
As a newbie I might be missing somethings here. PLEASE enlighten me if I have made an error in my proposal. But this in not partisian politics. But I truly would like to help those in this field and I think that your voices need to be heard.
If my idea is lame then please offer some other proposals that may assist the nursing field.
PS.
Does the ANA do anything like this?

In all of my years as being a nurse in the US, I never ran into the problems that I see being posted. I am sure that there are other good places out there, but as someone mentioned in another thread, the people that don't like something are going to be much more vocal than the ones that do....
(I think that it was llg.)
There is nothing that I would change where I worked, other than the weather. :)

You bring up some valid points. The gist of your argument is wonderful and the mention of the ANA profound. However, you will find that few nurses belong to the ANA or ANY nursing organization for that matter and nurses tend not to be activists. There are some exceptions, but most of us (and I include myself in this) don't have the time or energy to advocate politically. Anyone with other opinions??? BTW I do belong to the Emergency Nurses Assoc and the American Case Manager's Assoc.

Unite? Yes. Activism is where it's at. The medical lobby is strong. Just try to find a U.S. doctor that doesn't belong to the AMA. It would be a challenge. I don't think we realize the potential of a united front.
I am a tad suprised by the lack of overhelming response. From all the griping I thought there would be more. Oh well....
Suzanne4, I hope that I have your luck in the job field. Was it a conscious choice to only be in certain environments or it just worked out that way?
To TraumaRUs and RN Kitty Kat,
I thought my suggestion was an easy way to canvass for support by just writing a letter. I was hoping that someone who knew the field could draft a letter and post it here then all one had to do was print and mail it.
With the number of RN's working as nurses or not, the sizeable number of nurse could be a potent political force.

i think the most effective way of sending a message is through the tv. have to come up with some attention getting story. get it on talk shows. i bet that a lot of people out there would be very much interested in hearing the truth about what is going in in health:angryfire care. i am happy for the perfect nurses with the perfect jobs out there but i wont allow anyone to minimize the questionable conditions that most of us nurses have to work under and the horrors that many of us have seen. if nursing was all that good then why the turn over quiting and firings, and vacancies??????? if you got a perfect job better hang on to it because not too many out there like that. and bless you for trying to inspire all of us to do something. and those that have the perfect nursing job should not turn their backs on those who dont you are only one firing away from winding up just like the rest of us.

Salus,
That was a nice proposal you post. Get your act together and do something about the nursing profession in the States. By doing this, nurses who are paranoid of foreign nurses won't be blaming us for the nursing shortage in your country. Nobody will be complaining that foreign nurses are bringing wages down, etc.
But remember, as long as nurses keep on bickering to each other regarding the conditions of the nursing profession in the US. Foreign nurses will still be in demand. That is a FACT!
