hi everyone, recently moved to mass from nyc. took two jobs, one FT one per diem. started per diem job this week. was informed in interview that nurses at this facility belonged to the union. I find out today at day two of orientation, that I am required to pay $325 - $375 per year, depending on whether I want voting priveledges or not. I don't feel that the cost - benefit ratio really applies to me. I will be there at most 3 shifts per month. And I don't plan on staying very long. Just to make some extra money while adjusting to the move costs etc. Is there anyway out of this dues paying? it was presented as mandatory. And the price is the same for RN's, whether you are full time or per diem. My full time facility does not participate in a nurses union. any advice is greatly appreciated!!! thanks

why don't u just pick overtime at the full time job. if that's not available check the papers for other job openings. there are tons of nursing jobs out there.

it was presented as mandatory

I would double check if it is mandatory because I didn't think belonging to the union was but I'm not positive

and as an aside, if you ever do have to pay dues - they're tax deductible

From what I understand nurses who want to work in a closed shop either have to pay dues or have the equivalent amount of money sent to a charitable organization if they have philisophical/religious objections to union membership. Either way you need to pay if you want to work there. You're talking about $25 a month and you can decide if it's worth it for you or not.

I'm sure you could go to an anti-union website and they may be able to advise you further. http://www.stopunions.com is one that's been mentioned on this BB many times.

My place is a closed union and if you do not paid you are fired. Ours is $600/year or 50/month

Unions are good for us, we get raises.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I can't seem to negotiate my salary very well. Unions do that for me. My thoughts are if we all we to get paid better, being part of the union is great.

You are working at a union shop. If you want to get paid what the employees get paid there I think you should pay the dues. If you don't then I think you might want to consider moving on. Just my humble opinion and I know there are people on this site who are not gracious and kind to unions.
