UNF Accelerated BSN Summer 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Published

The deadline to apply for UNF's Accelerated BSN program beginning Spring 2013 will be here before we know it (January 15, 2013), which is why I wanted to go ahead and start this topic now. Many of us are taking the TEAS V soon (if we have not already) and finishing up prerequisites (if needed), so I am sure we all have some questions or information to share with each other.

The overall GPA is just a minimum requirement and not part of the evaluation ranking right?! My 1st bachelors I did ok (above a 3.0, at least..) but I was "let's just graduate". My pre req GPA is smokin though!!! I'm not even applying for summer and I'm a nervous wreck! I want this do badly!! Good luck to all the summer applicants!!!

sunbaby0811 - both GPAs count but differently. Your overall GPA must be a minimum of 2.90 to apply to the program but is not considered in the application process. Then your prereq GPA is what is used for the nursing school application process. If this is smokin then that makes you competitive :) You will want a smokin score on your TEAS V as well. GPA x 100 + TEAS V [each subsection added together maxing out at 400 points for a perfect score] gives you a score out of 800 points. This score is what determines if you get invited for an inteview.

For example if you have a 3.92 prereq GPA: 3.92 x 100 = 392

TEAS V example score:

Reading 85.5%

Math 95.5%

Science 80.0%

Grammar 85.5%

--------------------------

Total Score = 346.5

Then 392 + 346.5 = 738.5 - - - - which would be competitive. A few pages back I posted the acceptance stats from last summer so you can see how you would compare to those admitted and those denied.

Does anyone else still have transcripts under review? My audit summary still shows I don't have all the prereqs even though my transcripts made it in by Jan 2. :( Guess they're making their way through all the apps...makes me nervous though!

jennyp - mine is showing complete but they got my last transcript on 12/18. You might want to call to find out if there is some sort of hang up. But I wouldn't stress too much if they show received by Jan 2nd.

@juliesnow - good luck to you too!

@sunbaby - you totally sound like me in regards to earning the 1st degree.. i know that feeling!

@jennyp - yes, i also have a pre-req missing from myWings (micro) even though the transcript made it before the deadline. i emailed admissions and this is what they said:

Hi Melissa,

Yes, we did receive that transcript with that particular class. However, you will want to speak with your academic advisor so that you can be override into the class that you need.

tell me how that response makes any sense at all? im hoping it's just taking them a long time to update everything - they took FOREVER to update myWings the first time i sent my transcripts in so i dont know what else to think.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this site and it looks like a great resource.

I have applied for the UNF ABSN program, 2013. It is one of the three programs I applied for and probably the least likely to accept me. In this post I'm mainly addressing and exercising my anxiety as I wait for the results.

The 800 point system that people were talking about in this thread, I've never seen that mentioned anywhere before. But it does make sense as round one decisions are 50% GPA 50% TEAS. Even if they don't literally use 800 points, this is a good way to conceptualize the process.

I've been taking nursing prerequisites for a year now (part time). I've knocked out an A in every single class thus far over the course of this year. My previous degrees are both in business so I was short on the sciences. I did take chemistry and physics while earning my AA . . . and now it is depressing that grades I earned 12 years ago--in classes I thought I'd never need--are affecting my career today! So my grades are like A, A, A, A, A, C, C. The net result is a 3.43 prereq. GPA which I feel doesn't reflect my current and improved discipline.

Then there's the TEAS! Wow, talk about a flash-back to high school! I underestimated the toughness of this test and didn't give myself enough time to prepare. My heart sank while doing prep work and seeing questions about the layers of the atmosphere, long division by hand, scale models, etc. I scraped by with an 83.3%. I did better on the GRE!

Using the 800 point system: 343+333 = 676.2

Would that score meet the requirements?

docosa - I can certainly identify with your anxiety as well as having old classes on your transcripts that don't reflect your true potential.

From what I can tell your TEAS score is competitive. And your GPA alone isn't exclusionary. I did read somewhere that generally the cut off for an invitation for the inteview is around 680. Maybe someone else remembers that more clearly than I? If I am right about that you might just squeak by or you may not....

I wouldn't stress too much. You could always plan to retake those two classes you have a C in over the summer and apply for the regular program in the fall. It is only three months later, and the regular program is only one semester longer.... I retook freshman biology, not because of my grade but because it had been so long since I had it. Although, you may have to register at a school that will allow you to retake classes with a C. I don't think FSCJ for example allows you to do that.

Bottom line, you sound like a smart person who can knock it out of the ballpark. So don't let the setbacks discourage you. Just find another way to make it work.

Good Luck!

juliesnow, thanks for the encouragement! I'm trying not to let myself dwell on it because it is out of my hands at this point.

That's a good idea about applying to the regular program.

It is interesting... I also applied to UF's accelerated program and they only take your most recent 60 credit hours into consideration for GPA. So UF will see my GPA as top-notch. My GRE score was adequate, so combined with my high GPA and well-crafted Cirriculum Vitae and Essay, my odds of getting into UF are higher than UNF.

Comparing the two programs is interesting because they have such different admissions criteria it's like two different worlds. UF's cohort is more than twice the size, too. I have to wonder how it is financially viable for UNF to take in only 27 students for a non-graduate program.

docosa - I don't know for sure why UNF's cohort is so small, other than I believe they are trying to make it a quality program verses a large program. Also there is always the fact that there really aren't enough nursing instructors out there.

I have the same scenario between FSCJ & UNF. FSCJ isn't as exclusionary as UNF but because of their entrance requirements [pre-reqs] I actually fare better at UNF. Like I said before I have a couple of old classes that were not A's. But I did well on the NET so I am pretty certain if I don't get in at UNF I can go to FSCJ.

I went to the information season back in November and seem to remember it being mentioned that the number admitted is limited by the number of clinical locations willing to accept students. Since each clinical group consists of 9 students, that would be 3 clinical groups for ABSN and 5 for RPL.

thanks for the 411 honeybader. I am going to the info session on 3/1.

It's totally worth the time to go-it was actually really informative (versus just going over the same things that are on the SON webpage, which I was a bit afraid of) and gives you the chance to ask questions, address concerns, etc. It demystifies the process some :)

As someone who went through UNF's program I can tell you that you are going to HATE their community nursing portion (which is their focus). Each semester you will have to go out into the community for 16-90 hrs and do various things like blood pressures, baby/elderly sitting, etc. By the time 5th semester roles around you will be doing the same skills you learned how to do in your first semester. Oh yeah, and you are stuck in the same part of the community for the ENTIRE two years...this is referred to as your "homebase". It is such a HUGE waste of time. No one in the program liked it. And to make matters worse, no one in the program had ANY desire to be a community nurse. My advice, pick JU or another school...even FSCJ (ADN). Just FYI

HM2Doc - Just curious if the community nursing portion is the only thing you didn't like about the program. What were the things you DID like. What did you think of the academics and clinicals, or is the homebase community nursing part of the clinicals? When did you graduate, and are you working as a nurse now? Do you think the program prepared you for your career as a nurse?

Do the students get a say as to where their homebase is located? It is my understanding that FSCJ has a similar issue in that they are assigned clinicals at one hospital and they don't get to change it up.

Thanks for your opinions - it is nice to hear from someone who's been there.
