UNCG BSN Summer 2017 Start

Anyone else planning to apply to UNCG's nursing program in December? If so, what are your stats? Nervous yet excited about submitting an application! I've heard the program is pretty competitive. After some research UNCG has become one of my top choices.

I actually ended up calling Student Blue this morning and was told that students can't enroll OR waive unless they are signed up for classes. Since we wouldn't enroll in classes until March we wouldn't have to take any action concerning insurance for classes this summer, but will need to waive or enroll in the fall.

Ok, thank you for the info. How is everything else going for you?

Hi kmcelroy86, no problem! Everything is going well! Everyday I get more eager to hear back from the nursing program. March can't come soon enough! It'll be here before we know it! I'm a little stressed since I'm waiting to do a lot of the major things until I hear from the program. So housing, finding a job, applying for loans etc are all on pause for now. I have a to-do list of everything that needs to get done as soon as I get that acceptance letter :) Fingers crossed! Hope things are going well for you!

Has anyone heard anything from UNCG's nursing program yet? I know the application said they would send letters no later than 3/10, but I was hoping we would hear sooner. Really praying for an acceptance letter! My anxiety is through the roof!

Hey CN_2bRN919, I actually saw you on a Queens thread too! Did you decide to go there instead? I did get into UNCG a couple of weeks ok (can't remember the specific date). I too was also admitted to the ABSN program at Queens. I'm wondering what you decided to do? I am also waiting to hear from UNC, as I have been waitlisted there. But for now, I am torn between going to Queens and UNCG. I actually did end up switching to the traditional program at Queens because I have decided the accelerated option doesn't sound ideal for me. I have talked to the financial office there too, and the price is nearly identical between the ABSN and traditional, so I decided to switch so that I could also wait to hear from UNC before having to commit.

My question for you is, did you also get accepted to UNCG as well? I do not know how to decide between the two academically speaking. I have heard good things about both programs. Obviously Queens cost more, but I would rather live in Charlotte than Greensboro, so it has been very hard to decide. Thank you!!

Hi SN2751! Unfortunately I did not get into UNCG. I was very surprised! Especially after getting into Queens. I was thinking Queens would be more competitive. UNCG was actually my top choice because of the price. I've heard both UNCG and Queens have great nursing programs. After hearing that I did not get into UNCG, my decision was between going to a traditional program in VA (I was admitted there back in the fall to start in May) or to go to Queens. The cost of the VA program and the cost of going to Queens was essentially the same so I chose Queens: A) because if given the option I would like to stay in NC. B) I could finish the program faster and C) I feel like I would have more opportunity to further my career in Charlotte after graduation. If offered a job in Charlotte after finishing the program, I could see myself living there. When it came to being in VA or Greensboro, I did not see myself living there after the program ended. I have several friends who are nurses who were offered jobs at sites where they did their clincial rotation.

I'm a little nervous about the accelerated program, but I read a post from a grad of Queens program that said the ABSN is very doable and not as time consuming and crazy as people think it is. When will you hear from UNC? Is their program accelerated or traditional? Why did you decide to switch to the traditional track at Queens?

I'm so sorry to hear that, but I too have heard Queens has a good program, and Charlotte is an amazing area. I loveeeee the campus at Queens, and the area around it. Honestly, it doesn't get any nicer! Part of the reason I decided on the traditional BSN is because I might not get a response from UNC until after the first day of class on May 17th. I wanted to have the ability to wait to hear from UNC before having to move and financially commit to Queens -- since the ABSN program starts on May 15th I wouldn't have been able to. So that was one of the reasons. The other reason is because I want to pursue grad school following the completion of my BSN, and I want to maintain exceptional grades so that I can get into a good program. I was afraid that I might sacrifice my GPA slightly by trying to rush through the accelerated program. I think it's a great option though -- it would be amazing to be done after 12 months -- but it just isn't right for me at this point in time.

SN2751, good luck! I am sure you will get a seat at UNC. If you do, I am assuming that is your first choice? I have not been to the Queens campus yet, but I'm very excited to visit! I plan to go visit the area in April. I'm hoping to find a place to live when I go visit. The area from what I've heard is very nice but very expensive to live in!

Yes, UNC is my first choice! There are a lot of great places to live in Charlotte that are cheaper than the Myers Park area (where Queens is). You might have to commute a bit to campus, but I'd say you should be able to find something reasonable within a 15 minute commute range. It all depends on your budget, because there are fairly reasonable places closer to campus too -- especially if you can find roommates! If you're thinking a single bedroom you might end up paying a lot, so try contacting others in the ABSN class to try and look for some roomies!
