UNC - 2011 start

U.S.A. Colorado

I thought I would start this thread for those interested in applying to UNC for the Summer or Fall 2011 start, like me! :D

I went to an advising session there today and the advisor was fantastic. Because I will have my Associates of Science at the end of this semester all my liberal arts core is satisfied. Since I already applied to CU I met most of their pre-reqs, but still have to get my CNA and take 4 additional classes. I need BioChemisty, Nutrition in Health and Illness, Pharmacology and Pathophysiology.

All of these additional classes can be taken online, for those who are interested in taking them this way. BioChem is Chem 102 through ccconline. Patho is Bio 216 through them as well. The nutrition class (FND 357) can be taken through UNC online and they will accept pharmacology online through Long Beach City College, ADN 225 (lbcc.edu), and University of Wyoming, PCHY 4470 (ecampus.uwyo.edu).

The advisor told me entry into their program is GPA based. It is based on your cumulative GPA which is calculated from last 45 credits, along with those from the pre-reqs (BioChem, AP 1&2, Nutrition (FND 357, *not* HWE 100), Stats and English (research paper). Basically, they start with the 4.0's and work their way down until they fill their 72 spots. She said you could very likely get a spot if you have a GPA of >3.6. You also have to submit a resume which they said will only be used as a tiebreaker if necessary. No experience or volunteer work is required.

They have walk-in advising sessions multiple times during the semester (except summer), and I would highly advise going to talk to them. Check out the campus and the building too, they're beautiful.

Well, that's it. I hope some people who are working to apply to this school join the thread. It is always nice to get to know each other, share info and encourage one another, before and during the program. BTW, Benedina told me almost word for word what the advisor said to me today - so I think she seriously deserves a cookie! :lol2:

Yay!! I was so excited to see the applications posted on UNC's website. I am not attending that advising session but I will be registered for Nutrition & Pharm next semester. Good Luck!!!!

Do you already have a PIN, Blueberry? I wish I didn't have to go to an advising session, but I guess it's required to get that darn PIN. It's not like I don't know which classes to take this spring. :lol2:

Which times are you registering for? I hope to be taking Nutrition on WTWF and Pharm on Thursdays. Maybe we'll be in the same classes. :)

I was excited to finally see the app uploaded too. It's now sitting on my desktop so I can stare at it for the next two months! :lol2:

I got a little bit more info yesterday.

The lowest GPA accepted last year was a 3.4 and the average was 3.7.

They have usually between 140-150 applicants for the 72 spots.

About the program: their clinical hours are 1225, which is higher than the other program at 1080. 99% of the people that start the program finish it. There are also 6-7 students per clinical site.

One cool thing she was me was they have a new (4 months old) sim called NOELLE. She is pregnant and actually gives birth. She blinks, talks, all the vitals can be programmed - the cervix even dilates! They also have a sim baby and two others. The two others can have be filled with blood so they will bleed. It is awesome! I can't wait to see the sim lab!!

One last thing. They know there is a problem with the scheduling for the nutrition and the pharm class. They are going to try and fix that before registration starts so people don't have to come to campus every day.

Is anyone going to be taking the last of their pre-reqs on campus this spring? I will be in Nutrition on T/Th and Pharm on Tuesdays. Thankfully, they changed the scheduling conflict and now I only have to drive 2 days a week... however I have to get from Gunter Hall to the Library in 15 minutes - I just figure I will get some speed walking time in! :lol2:

If any hopefuls are lurking and interested: the nursing office said they hope to get the letters out this week.

Good luck to those waiting! :yeah:
