UMDNJ Accelerated program

Hi everyone, I'm new here and happy to have found this forum.

I have applied to UMDNJ back in early May and still waiting to hear from them. I am hoping to get into the Accelerated BSN program for Spring.

Has anyone applied to this school or has been accepted?

I was wondering how strict they are in choosing applicants and how many students actually get accepted. Is there a waiting list? I have tried calling Student Services, but they don't give a straight answer. They also don't give a status over the phone. They said just to wait for a letter in early Oct.

Maybe alot of people who apply to UMDNJ don't post on these forums?

Or maybe they read them, but don't write anything?

I do wonder though, how many people actually know about the Accelerated Program at UMDNJ. I think it only started about 2 yrs. ago. Maybe since it's always been a Medicine/Dentistry hospital many people don't think that it has a nursing program.

I just learned about it last year, by word of mouth. But when I had been searching for Accl. Programs, I never saw UMDNJ listed, not even on the American Assoc. of College of Nursing site (AACN), or even on discovernursing.com.

Yet, just last month UMNDJ was not listed on the AACN bulletin for Accl. Nursing Programs in the U.S., but it is now. So maybe now more people will find out about it and apply.

Curiously, when I went to the Info Session at UMDNJ there were very few people who showed up. I figured there would be alot more. Or maybe they couldn't get out of work to attend at 4:30pm.

Did you see alot of people when you attended the info session?

I wonder if it's true that so many people apply, or they are just trying discourage people who may not have the qualifications they are looking for.

I already completed all my prereqs and sent my application in June. Victor said they reviewing for Spring semester this week and next. I hope to start in January. I'm so nervous that I won't get in though. I have a decent GPA, and have always done well writing essays. But I don't have very impressive recommendations (ie from doctors) that some people may have.

If I get rejected, I just don't know if reapplying will give me any more chances of getting in. I should've asked Victor that.

But in my opinion I just think that if they are so selective, they may always look for the top people or what they consider 'top'. So having rejected someone the first time, they may have had their reasons for not considering them 'top' and reapplying may not change their views. Unless the person gets different references maybe. I'm just not sure how they look at re-applicants.

But if they gave all the re-applicants first choice or priority then there would be less spots for people who are new applicants but may be considered 'top' by them.

I guess I am just thinking this through way too much. LOL

But since they said there are only 50 spots and over 300 applicants, it truly makes me wonder who they select and weed people out.

Seton Hall by the way, lets in over 200 people each semester since they have more teachers and classes for each credit course offering.

Judging from the participation in this thread on Allnurses.com, it's SEEMS that you and I are the only people who applied to the program and really concerned about getting accepted. This gives me some comfort in my worry of getting accepted because it shows that we are special...we're internet savvy!

Have you finished all of the prereq's? I haven't so I'm the one who should be very worried. :uhoh3: My plan B is to apply again for the summer semster. In fact, that would be the better time for me so I could save some more money.

I think word got out last year. The summer incoming class is new for next year. I was researching accelerated programs on the internet and I came across UMDNJ. My friend went to the University of Michigan for their 12 month accelerated degree. I wasn't about to go to Michigan.

So what did you think of the info session? When I went, there were only two other people. I thought these sessions would be packed. The overall GPA cut off used to be 2.75. According to VM, UMDNJ-SN raised teh cut off to 3.0 to encourage people with more competetive (higher) GPA's to apply. I'm not sure where that places us but I'd like to think that we are good enough to compete.

I just hope that we make it!

SHU accepts 200 students / semester? I'm sure they're playing the game taht not all 200 would stay in the program. Talk about take the money and run!!!

I thought the info session was helpful. But it also made me more nervous about getting in, since so few applicants are accepted.

So if the cut off used to be 2.75, maybe that means many applicants didn't have much higher GPAs. I hope that is true still, so at least I have some chance since my GPA is over 3.0. But I know that it's not just GPA that counts.

I agree about Seton Hall. They are very expensive. I guess they have more teachers and more classrooms so they can let in more students.

Victor said that UMDNJ wanted to let in more students but they just don't have the room or the teachers.

The session made me more relaxed. VM told me that they will pay particular attention to our essays in order to assess our writing skills.

Now that the review of our applications has started, I'm getting stressed. I hope that my professors submitted my reccomendations on time. I saw my professor walking out on the street today...I'm wondering if that's a good sign. Maybe I should have offered him a ride to wherever he was going.

We'll hopefully find out before the end of the month whether we get accepted or not. Good luck Mia!!! I'll include you in my prayers.

Now, I can't stop thinking about it and I can't seem to study for my Micro exams.

UGGH!

Good luck to you too!!

I took Microbiology last year and it was one of my favorite classes. I think it's fascinating ot study micro-organisms. Some people think it's gross though.

But because of that class, I am more conscious of germs everywhere. Sometimes not a good thing though. LOL

If you need any help with studying maybe I can give you some pointers.

Good luck on your exam!

We're just going through the first eight chapters which is pretty much intro / review stuff. I hope to do well. So far, my class doesn't seem to find anything gross. I guess the smell of Escherichia coli hasn't been strong enough.

Being an employee of the food industry, I already am a germ freak. Luckily for me, I am already familiar with sanitizers so that should help on the antiseptic chemical questions. WIth respect to the food industry, germs are of great concern to those w/ compromised immune systems (prego women and their fetus, young children, elderly and immuno-suppressed people).

Thanks for offering some micro help. I just might hold you to it in the near future.

Good luck to you too!!

Hey Mia and all others concerned, I'll meet you guys at UMDNJ in January 2006.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Are you at the program at Newark? If so, what do you think of it so far? I'm in my third semester, so if you need any advice feel free to ask!! Good luck!!

I'm actually in my fourth semester now. Thanks for the offer of advisement though. If you need advice, I'd be happy to offer some. Good luck with this semester.

HI I came across your thread. I am waiting for my letter from UMDNJ hopefully it will come soon. I wanted to ask you how the classes and what is the schedual like?

thanks in advance

Because of the numerous tasks required from each class, the collection of classes each semester made the program VERY demanding. Because it is an accelerated program, EXPECT no cake-walks. If only you could take one or two classes each semester, it wouldn't be so bad.

From what I've read in the student government minutes, the program schedule might change so I cannot tell you how it will be. Just expect to be in class 5 days per week, which might include a Saturday clinical.

Good luck!

You might want to give them a call. I received my letter a few weeks ago. Good luck.
