UMB Accepted BSN students Fall 2010 Shady Grove campus

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! and congratulations for being accepted to the University of Maryland School of Nursing! :yeah:This thread is intended for the newly admitted class for Fall 2010 who will be attending the Shady Grove campus in Rockville, Maryland. Much of what we talk about will also apply to students attending in Baltimore.I invite you to post your questions here, as opposed to emailing me at Shady Grove, to help keep my email inbox more manageable. But please do not let that keep you from emailing if you feel more comfortable with that. Also, that way, your questions, which are likely to be the same as your classmates, can all be answered at once. You all should have just been emailed class registration instructions for fall classes. While we need you to register soon, you do not have to feel compelled to do it at the crack of dawn on Monday, April 19. There is only one section of each of your required classes, they do not conflict, and there are plenty of seats for your entire class. That having been said, you will make my life easier if you register in the next two weeks as it is my job to keep after all our students until they have registered. Note that registration will generate a bill, but the due date is not until August 23.

We cannot wait to meet you all!

But the ID is a separate card from the Easy Refund Higher One card, correct?

But the ID is a separate card from the Easy Refund Higher One card, correct?

I don't know for sure but my bet is that they are one and the same. Try calling the Onecard office.

I had a question about the Easy Refund Higher One card - I looked up the closest locations for the ATMs that you can use the card at for withdrawals and the closest one is at the Baltimore campus - it doesn't look like there's one at Shady Grove is there? If I don't activate the Higher One card, will any scholarship/grant refund be refunded back to me via check or direct deposit? I don't want to activate the card if I'm going to get charged ATM fees because there aren't any ATMs close by that accept it...

Hi there. Congrats to everyone that have been accepted and look forward to seeing you around this fall. I am a current student at Shady Grove, graduating this December.

For the Higher One Card, you need to go into the account and set it up. I don't remember if I actually had to activate the card itself or not, but I never use it. If you get loans and/or grants, and there is a balance owed you by UMB, the funds are sent to Higher One. From there the money can be direct deposited to your personal account or sent by check through One Card with no fee. UMB won't send you any money directly. Hope this helps.

So then I'll have to fill out a form to have my refund direct deposited to my bank account?

There is an online form on their website, that if I remember right, just requires a fax with your account info and signature.

As far as cards being thrown away or other problems, I wouldn't sweat about it now. You will receive endless regular daily emails from Higher One in your UMB email account when and if there is money due to you. I initially ignored them because I didn't want to deal with Higher One and thought I could get a check directly from UMB but that isn't the way it works. There will be links and contact info in the email and I would take care of it then.

Congratulations to the newcomers! If anyone would like to buy the speech and research book for the upcoming classes, please PM me or let me know on the thread if you're interested, so I can contact you privately. I can meet you the week before classes, I'll be on campus for open lab. We can help each other out! Thank you for your time :)

hi classmates:

i e-mailed prof dobish for some advice on which texts she thought were worth purchasing for the nursing fundamentals class (304). her feedback is in (italics) below. hope you find this helpful.

the package does include the necessary books for the class, but you also need the communications module book which is interpersonal communication by arnold and boggs. some people don't want the study guide or the access to my nursing lab so that is why it is available separately. the text book is very necessary. the access to my nursing lab many of the student really like as it has practice test, study guides and the skills. the demonstration of the skill will now be available on you blackboard site in the fall but the mynursinglab will provide another look at how to do the skills. others also like the study guide. some people buy just the book and the my nursing lab. also you really need the communcations module book. the my nursing lab is available for two years so some students use it other courses also. i wish i could be of more help, but you have to choose what works best for you. i look forward to meeting you in the fall.

For 304, I do recommend the textbook. It helped me a lot for the lab and lecture part. You will need the speech book for the communication section. I didn't find mynursinglab too helpful but if visual aid is how you learn, go for it.

For 333, you definitely need to buy the book and workbook. I carried the book around the most, very useful book to keep.

For 320, you can get away with the 4th edition of research book. I've both speech and research books I'll sell together if people started looking at the book list. The study guide book they offer during the first week of school was helpful for the "final" quiz but we've requested them to change the book up a little so maybe it'll be helpful for your class this semester.

For 315, I recommend both of the patho books, I studied mainly out of them, along with the slides. But, people can pass without the books.

Good Luck getting all the supplies for school. Check out Uniforms - Nursing Scrubs, Nursing Uniforms & Medical Scrubs - Allheart for scrubs (there's a larger selection of sizes on there).

That's helpful feedback. Thanks.

I am noticing that there have not been many entries lately. Has the program overwhelmed everyone?

Is it true that if we missed one class, we would have to start over the course next semester? I have a schedule conflict and might have to miss the 1st day of class.

I greatly appreciate all your reply, tip, advice.
