UMASS Worcester - GEP 2021

Published

Hello,

Anybody applying to the DNP program GEP at UMASS, Worcester, hoping to start next year 2021??

I will appreciate the experiences of others and tips on how to sail through the interview! Thank you.

Yes! This was the first time I actually made it to a waiting room to speak to someone (and they came) and not just waiting on a host to show up. And he was very nice and informative, I think very overwhelmed but doing the best they can. Good luck!

I just finished my chat with financial aid zoom office hours. Very nice gentleman who answered my questions. I stayed in the waiting room until my turn came up. I did ask the question that someone on here previously wanted to know about how much institutional aid is given to students, what percentage of students receive awards, and what the average amount is. He really couldn't answer that with any specific numbers as it varies widely year to year and is based on each individual need. He encourages you to simply complete the FAFSA and apply for aid so you can have options available to you. Hope that helps!

That was me! Thanks!

Did he mention when financial aid information will be released/how much we are receiving?

Hi @CCProspectiveDNPFNP:

Congrats on your recent acceptance! I’ll number my responses to your questions based on your question number. I apologize that this turned into a book. ?

1.) A facebook group I think is the best way to connect with other incoming students. That’s what we did last year (it’s called: UMass Med GSN Incoming class 2020) and then we later created a “social hour” on zoom as a meet and greet. -------------------------- can send an email to all accepted students notifying them of the creation of the facebook group and disseminate zoom links as needed so people can join and connect. I’ll join the facebook group and/or meet and greets as well (if you like) when one of you creates it and I can add first year input as well. I’ll also notify my cohort and have them join to not be the only opinion in the room (LOL). I’m sure they would love to join and help answer questions.

2.) Last year (around Summer time) a Google doc circulated through the above mentioned facebook page for either older students looking for new roommates or new students looking for a roommate. I recommend to start this right as Summer hits (May) to make sure you can find people in time and lock-in a lease.

And to gain insight on how to succeed in this program, what went well for us/didn’t go so well, etc. I would recommend to meet with some of us who are in our first or second year on Zoom. If you want to meet with me to ask the non-public questions, we can definitely arrange that, or if you want a small group of us, I can see if I can arrange for you all to zoom meet some people from my class. A different perspective is always good. ?

Now to answer @wp650 about matching preceptors to students:

The answer is yes. For clinical, they automatically assign you (in groups of 3) to a clinical instructor and location. Unfortunately you can’t pick the time, floor, instructor, etc.

For the end of GEP year internship and NP internships (might have been what you meant), they also arrange for us to have a preceptor for the Summer to work with. I guess there were issues in the past with students not doing much by working with their friends who were nurses/NP’s so then they decided to assign people instead. I hope that answered your question.

Please tag me and let me know if anyone here needs anything else. ?

Hi @AMPatts1190 !

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer those questions! Your answers were super helpful and reassuring to know what to expect and look for going forward. And I think that'd be awesome if you were able to join the facebook group and even members of your cohort as well if they wanted to! I also liked your idea about creating a group Zoom meeting to talk about other non-public questions as well I think that could be beneficial, so thank you for offering to organize that. ?

Hi!

I also was able to meet with a woman from the Financial Aid office and she was really kind and she answered all the questions I had!

A question I asked was essentially the same as this one, and she mentioned that after completing FAFSA and the application on our UMass financial aid account, we should receive information regarding our financial aid within a couple weeks. The amount received is subjective to the applicant if they qualify for aid like grants, and/or the budgeted amount the Bursar's office calculates subjectively for your student needs, which should be addressed in the letter I believe :).

@CCProspectiveDNPFNP:

No problem at all! PM me or inform the group of us when you make that facebook page and then I’ll join it too. I’ll let my cohort know too so we can organize events through facebook too.

Do you (or anyone) have the part of the application to upload documents like tax returns, etc? I only had a page for like basic demographics questions so far at least.

Hello everyone! I've been lurking on this thread for awhile now and wanted to introduce myself. I was also accepted last Friday to the FNP track, and UMass is my top school so I will be attending in the Fall! Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted, and I can't wait to get to know you all! ?

Hi @acove23!

Congrats on your acceptance to UMass! I'm on the FNP track as well and will be attending in the fall (as it was my top choice too ? )! Glad to already (somewhat) know someone else who will be going through many of the same courses as me!

Unfortunately, I didn't see a part that prompted me to upload additional documents, and I only had about a page of information to fill out as well. I believe if you fill out FAFSA, they will have access to those documents if you list UMass as a school on your FAFSA form, and they can use that in combination with the additional form on our account to send us financial aid information.

At least that is what my understanding of it was from what I learned from the woman I spoke to ?.

@AMPatts1190

Great, will do! I remember you mentioned from one of the questions you answered for me was that in previous years Diane would send out an email to all accepted students about joining the group, is that correct? I didn't want to be too forward with it or eager and create it pre-maturely LOL

@CCProspectiveDNPFNP:

I don’t think you will be too forward in asking her as she was more than happy to do that for us last year. It’s too hard to get that level of reach without her help and many people don’t know that these groups/pages exist (like this one). As she admits new people, she can continue to forward them the facebook link. :)
