Gerry,

I e-mailed one of the instructors on the first nursing course since I'm trying to make a decision whether to start in Sept. or January 09 - I'm going to be starting a new job too. She said expect to spend about 18 hours per week at least during the first part of the semester - reading, writing, lectures, etc. Did you find this to be the case with everything added together? Did you find these classes to be overwhelming? I have only been out of nursing school 8 months myself. This couldn't be as bad as nursing school, or could it???

Unless the course has changed, no I did not spend no where near 18 hours a week on the assignments. I usually spent no more than 4 hours a week doing the assigned reading and finishing the assignments. No the classes where not overwhelming at all in my opinion. Thus far I have gotten straight A's in all of the nursing classes and I am not the brightest bulb in the package :) I started the program 6 months out of nursing school, and its no where near as bad as nursing school. I have yet to take one exam. There is a lot of writing, but it is very manageable.

I have heard the same thing that gerry79 said from former and current summer students.

Well just an update......first off Umass is great and organized. Although the first semester is not hard, there is tons of reading, watching power point lectures, and graded topic discussions along with papers due. You also have to attend a 2hr online class once a week, but if you miss it it is ok and you listen to it on the archive. I started off late and had to play catch-up. I feel it is somewhat time consuming....but still beats sitting in a classroom setting. You do become computer savvy. (which I found frustrating at first at I am tech challenged). I have not taken the challenge tests yet, but will soon. Organization and sticking to a study/participate schedule is key so as to not get overwhelmed.:)

I would go for the masters. For you, obtaining a BSN would be counter productive. Have you looked into the MSN (NP) program at MGH? You could still get your RN before you graduate ( I believe its after the first year or so). A coworker is in there program and seems to enjoy it.

Yes, almost finished. It has really gone by pretty fast!

Hi Gerry,

5 semesters? Does that include summers or just fall and spring semester? So is the program 2 1/2 years? 3 hours a week of studying and papers? Completely online? Any info would be greatly aapreciated.

thanks.

Yes summers are included. The UMass online RN to BSN is 18 months if you have all other pre reqs finished. It is completely online. There is a project that requires one to go to the campus, but they have made arrangements for those taking the course out of state. I personally have not spent 3 hours on class work, but am a known procrastinator and tend to complete my assignments near the due date. My work schedule allows that (I am off Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri). Any other questions feel free to ask!!

Hey, I was just on the UMass website and it states a full time student will complete the program in 3 semesters (Summer, Fall, Spring) and that it is only 1 year long. Are you in the 2 year part time option? I'm just trying to figure out my time tables here so I can map out a little bit of my future the best I can.

Hi..I know this is an old post..but I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind. Which campus did you go through? Looking at them all (on-line programs) Lowell, Boston and Darthmouth all seem to have different requirements.

Did you have clinicals? How much do you think you spent about?

Thanks!
