Major Nursing BS Admissions Decision We have done an initial review of your nursing application. If you have applied for the traditional nursing program, you have qualified to be placed in the nursing pool. Spring 2011 candidates will be mailed a decision letter the first week in December. Fall 2011 candidates will receive a decision letter by March 15. If you have applied for the accelerated nursing program the next step is an interview. A staff member will contact you shortly to schedule an interview.

To the Post Above:

Yes I believe you made it in!

Because it says "Major: NURSING BS"

If you didn't get in, it would say something like 'Undecided' . ;)

Thanks snipsnapsnap

I got a letter and i didn't get in..:(

Don't despair 1982!! I was sad when I didn't get into MassBay's program, but I did find another program that is still taking applications until June 1st for an Accelerated BSN program. Its with MCPHS and its in Worcester. The program itself is expensive, but I've read on these boards that you need to have a 2.7 (B-) minimum GPA to remain in the program and all I've heard is good things about it. You should try looking into it (I myself am still debating on whether or not to apply).

I wish you luck and I have faith that all those who desire to become nurses will achieve that goal because in the end they truly are meant to be nurses :nurse:

Would anyone know what the minimum GPA is to get into the traditional program? (with and without having taken any pre-reqs)

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I was considering Umass Boston as one of my top choices but i'll give you a little bit of background.

I took a year off of college before i started and then after that i started to go to my local community college taking prereqs for nursing and i didn't do so good in my math classes but i took Biology and got an A- and i am going to start taking a spanish class and anatomy and physiology and i am going to work hard and get good grades from here on out and i just started working as a cna i have experience working with someone with muscular dystrophy which was my brother and he passed away a year ago and i was thinking of writing about that in my admissions essay because that really is a big reason why i want to be a nurse. So i thought maybe that experience along with being a cna and learning spanish might help my chances of getting accepted because i do have a poor gpa as of right now it is 2.84 but i am planning on bringing it up and in a year and a half i will have my associates from my community college. I don't know what else i can do to help my chances. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Hi kristinafaith!!

In my opinion I think that everything you're doing is great and I think you're on the right path. Have you signed up for any info sessions at UMass or made an appointment to meet with an admissions counselor? Doing those two things could help you out and give you some of the answers you're looking for.

I hope some of this advice helps you out. I have faith you'll get in and I wish you all the best on your journey :)

Hi kristinafaith!!

The UMASS Boston traditional nursing program is pretty competitive. I went to the information session back in September and here are some of the things they discussed:

Fall deadline: Feb. 1st

Spring deadline: Nov. 1st

There were 1300 applicants for Fall 2011, out of that number only 170 were accepted. From that number, 80 were transfer students and 50 were freshmen from the University.

Some students opt to get an EHS (Exercise and Health Science) degree then go back to get their BSN.

Everything must be sent to the Undergraduate Admissions office (on the first floor of the Campus Center). Sciences that are 10 yrs or less old are accepted; all other classes have no limit.

The Spring semester is more competitive to get into: 50 out of 700 are accepted (I'm not sure, but I think he was referring to Spring 2011). If you aren't accepted for the spring (or fall), your application can be reactivated. When this happens you don't have to resubmit all of the papers you did last time as they hold on to them. All you have to do is fill out the appropriate paperwork and pay the $60 application fee.

For this past fall, the cumulative GPA for accepted transfer students was between 3.5 and 3.6. Strong essays and recommendations can help you get in if you're borderline ;). Recommendations can be emailed, just make sure to have the name and birthdate of the applicant in the subject line.

About 10-40 people get waitlisted for the Fall and about 5 people get waitlisted for the Spring.

If you're a transfer student with 30 or more credits then you don't need to take English 101, 102, and First Year Seminar. Nur 212 (Health Promotion and Teaching, Intermediate Seminar) doesn't transfer from anywhere. If you already have a prior Bachelors (like me) then you don't have to take that class at all (and a bunch of other classes that freshmen would have to take). Also any 3 credit Nutrition class can transfer.

Nursing classes/clinicals don't transfer whatsoever. No clinical classes are offered in the summer (there are about 5 semesters of clinicals to be taken). If you're a transfer student, it'll take about 2.5 to 3 years to finish the program. There are 44 clinical affiliations, mainly in the Boston and Cambridge areas. You can't pick your clinical placements, but you can still switch with another student if they are willing to do so.
