Hi guys!
I'm currently completing my undergrad+prereqs to apply in the next year to UM's ABSN program for the Spring 2019 session (Apps due next august). I know it's a very premature thread but I thought there might be other applicants for the Spring 2019 session who are already freaking out about apps like me. If any students who were accepted for previous threads could share their experience, tips, or stats here that would be incredibly helpful.
We got this.
Hello!
I have some advice for those coming to UM ABSN program. Take your clinical rotations very seriously. UM worked very hard to get the best clinical sites in Miami. Plus you paid a lot of my money for the best sites so treat each day in clinicals as if they were a real job. That means don't be on your phone texting or scrolling thru FB and IG. Nurse instructors and managers look down on that big time.
The best clinical sites are at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Ryder Trauma Center. If you want to work in Pediatrics then obviously Nicklaus Children's or Holtz is where you'll want to be. In your first two semesters you will not be able to choose your clinical placements. However, in your last semester in Role Transition class, you will have the opportunity to choose a specific unit such as ICU, SICU, ER, Med-Surg, etc...Having said that, your placement for Role Transition will depend on your GPA. You will need at least a 3.5 to 3.6 GPA to be competitive and be placed in your desired unit. ICU, SICU, MICU, PICU, NICU, ER are the hottest and go first.
Remember, this will be one of the hardest years of your life, but it's only 12 months and it's totally doable and worth it! Good luck!
Having a social life outside of school is difficult but that's cuz grades are a priority for me (I plan on going to grad school). You will have some downtime here and there but use it to get all the busy work out of the way so you can focus on exams. Honestly, the program is rigorous and very stressful so make friends in your cohort and even past cohorts and support each other.
For the HESI exams buy yourbestgrade.com. It's worth the investment. Forget about Kaplan. And for the NCLEX, everyone that I've talked to that took the NCLEX lives by Uworld. I plan on buying it very soon.
Hi everyone on the thread who started in Spring 2019!!! I hope you’re all enjoying the program so far. I have been accepted to start in the Spring 2020 cohort, and was wondering if any of you could please shed some light on your schedule for this year (dates for your finals/class schedule/anything?) I just would like to get an idea in my head. Thank you in advance!!!

Hi! I was accepted to the spring 2020 cohort. Can you give me any insight on when your orientation and your start date was?
Any other recommendations on what to buy as far as materials or uniform?
Thank you very much in advance!
Hey congratulations on your acceptance! If I recall correctly spring semester started the 2nd or 3rd week of January. During orientation you will have an opportunity to purchase your scrubs. They will also distribute your nursing tote bags that day which contains all the supplies needed for lab. Message me if you're interested in e-books for class. Hope that helps!
Hello! I was wondering if anyone is selling their books, as I will starting next January. Thanks ! Also, if they’re are any classes where the book isn’t really needed at all and I could save that money, I would really appreciate if you would let me know please! Every cent makes a huge difference when it comes to UM ?
Hi! I'm part of the spring 2019 cohort.. to be honest the only book I bought was pharm because I needed the code.. I rented patho and medsurg.. the rest I got pdfs. Some professors provide all the material you need on the PowerPoints, some you need to dig into the book for clarification and information...
If anyone is interested to buy... I have brand new scrubs that I didnt get to use top XS and bottoms S
If you need more info lmk.. I'm willing to help..
