UK nurses overseas - maintaining NMC registration

Published

OK, so the rules have changed, and CPD is no longer enough.

I'm wondering about how to achieve the "reflective discussion" part when there are no UK registered nurses where I work.

So, all expat Brits, please let me know how you plan to maintain your NMC registration. Is anyone agreeable to contacting me, with a view to maybe planning an email/Skype discussion that we both can document?

I'm in Chicago btw, so if there are any other UK nurses here, we can meet in Panera instead : )

In looking over my revalidation documents, I realize you are right...I have it backwards. I already have a confirmer (my Department Head), but need an NMC registered practitioner (working in the UK, under The Code) with which to have a reflective discussion. That changes things a bit. Why isn't the NMC more facilitative in this process? Is it possible that this revalidation process is a "weeding out" agenda? It's starting to feel that way to me. Hmm.

Well, I shall persevere! Thank you for clarifying the difference between the Reflective Discussion and the Confirmation. I've been using the wrong language throughout.

Even the folks back home are having problems revalidating, so its a huge issue for us in the US!!

So you need to get the 5 reflective accounts done first, and then have your discussion with an NMC registered nurse, based on the accounts and how they relate to the Code.

I found that it inevitably led to a discussion on the differences between UK and US nursing, and whether the situations described in the accounts would have happened in the UK, and if so, would they have been handled differently.

So if you plan on doing the discussion via skype, you would need to email the summary sheet from each account to the other nurse.

There are templates for this on the NMC website, but be warned, they do not print properly here as we have different sized paper and they are formatted for the English A4 paper! Just email them as saved documents, don't try to print and scan : )

You are so awesomely helpful...thank you! My five reflective accounts are completed (having discussed them at length with my Department Head...shhhh, don't tell her I wasted so much of her time!), so I will try to find a willing UK nurse to email them to as saved word documents so we can discuss them. I have emailed a good friend of my mother's, Violet Brown, to see if she is still on the register. If not, she may have some suggestions for me. It would be nice to find someone in pediatrics or a clinic setting, as I work with children ages 4 to 21.

Hi to all,

My Skype ID IS vidhya.kala1 and I'm very much willing to help nurse's renew their license with their reflective account discussion.I work in a Renal/Diabetic Unit in Arizona.

Oh the hoops we have to jump through...yeah if anyone needs me to confirm them I'm available. I'm crossing my fingers the process will change by next year as someone gave me hope up above.

I work in Adult ER, although we do rotate to Peds ER as needed.

If you can't find a Peds nurse, I can help. I'm in IL and I work third shift so it might be challenging to agree a time to skype if you are working clinic hours!

But let's have everyone in this situation join in, (thanks BabyNP and VKALA!), and see if there are enough of us to try and match up by specialty or time zone!!

If you were working as an RN in the US, why would you need a RTP course?

As long as you can show you did the clinical hours and met the study requirements, I don't see why they had a problem.

Did you keep your NMC registration current while in the US?

I kept it for about 10 years and then gave it up. NMC have been worthless, I have the practice hours and I had completed more than 35 hours of prep which they accepted but I couldn't find an RN in the UK who could act as my confirmer. When I called NMC for help they told me it had to be someone who had known me for 2 years. They suggested a return to nursing course which I found to be ridiculous. I needed a reference from a nurse who was on the same part of the register as I was on who had known me for at least 1 year out of the past 3 years and who I had been in contact with during the last 6 months. The only person who could have completed this for me was a family member as I hadn't worked with any British nurses in the US.

Thanks to the people who sent me a PM unfortunately I haven't been member long enough to send PMs so I can't reply.

Hi,

I'm a UK registered nurse in Tampa Florida and i'm trying to revalidate my UK licence that is due this October. I'm trying to do the "reflection discussion" portion of the application. I read from the booklet that any UK registered nurse can do the reflective discussion with any UK registered nurse. You do not have to be resident in the UK to be able to do this portion.

Is any UK registered nurse willing to do the reflection discussion for me as I'm willing to do that for any other person as a way of helping each other out. I'll like to connect with any UK nurse residing in the Tampa Bay area. Please let me know....In desperate need!!!!!

I'm in Illinois, but if you don't mind doing the discussion via WhatsApp, I can sign the form for you.

Mine is due December, I did the discussion part when I went home in April, but I know there are still more hoops to jump through!

and btw, I hope you and yours stayed safe during the recent hurricane.

Hi Skylark,

Thank you so much for coming to the rescue.

I will love to connect with you via whatsapp. And yes thank you we survived the hurricane. It was quite scary. We lost power for 4 days and had to stay in the hotel. It could have been worse.

Thanks babyNP I appreciate your kind gesture. I will like to keep in touch with you. Where are you located?
