(Our NCLEX pass rate was 90% in 2011 for graduates taking it for the first time.)

Who here has done the nursing program here? I checked other posts but it was more of a compare and contrast of UTHC, which I already know is a good program. Does any body know how good the nursing program at UIW is though? All I ever read about the program is that it's expensive. But money is not an issue (NO, I'm not rich, but I have a 73,000 MGIB, they do FASFA, scholarship AND yellow ribbon, so I'm good with tuition and I'll be a transer student, I am almost done with all my required courses) Is the nursing program hard to get into? Average GPA? ACT? Lots of hands on?
Yes, I know UTHC is probably the better choice and its cheaper, but honestly I'm kinda self concious about getting in....They have more pre-reqs and I worry my GPA isn't high enough. I have a 3.4GPA
By the time I am out of the Army I'll be 26...almost 27! I can't be re-taking classes to get into a nursing program and reapplying every year only to get turned out (never know unless I try right?) I know it sounds lame but I really just wanna get my BSN and get on with my life after the military...I'M GETTIN OLD! So UIW seems the best route as of now.
I mostly hear about the MBA degrees from people who have been, which obviously doesn't interest me!
Any information from people who have been or people who have heard about it in regards to nursing would be great!

I am currently enrolled in the UIW nusing program. UIW IS a Yellow Ribbon school. The program is competitive to get into and there are only around 40 slots per cycle. They don't have more prerequisites than UTHSC just different ones than public schools. Very good nursing program in my opinion. Smaller classes with lots of personal attention. Be aware the program is 5 semesters instead of the 4 semesters at UTHSC that is a drawback for some. GPA was important but HESI test scores are VERY important! The better choice is the one you are more comfortable with since both nursing programs are highly regarded.

I go to UTHSCSA but two of my friends attend UIW. The one big difference is 5 semesters as opposed to 4... my friend and I started nursing school the same time, but I will graduate May 2014 and she graduates December 2014.

I have about 120 people in my class, she has about 40. She seems to enjoy it and it hasn't been too overwhelming for her. We don't have too much time to talk but I really haven't noticed a huge disparity in our nursing school experiences (UTHSCSA v UIW)

I do think she mentioned the people in her class were maybe a bit older than the people in mine... we have probably about half in our 20s, the rest early 30s, and a handful 40+. She said most of her classmates were in their late 20s/early 30s.

My parents wanted me to look into UIW, but I never considered it due to the expense and because I was tired of going to private, Catholic school - I went K-12, then 3 semesters at a Jesuit university). Otherwise, it's a great school, beautiful campus, friendly student body, respected program.

One thing I haven't been able to find is the nursing school acceptance rate. I think my grades are good enough to get in, but even if I did I'd still have score well on the HESI, their site says they test on ALL 7 areas, which scares me because chemistry and math arn't my strong points. I'm kinda going on a hope and a dream that I'll get in since it's the only school in San Antonio I'm interested in. I think I've got a good shot though :)

Sure thing! UTHSCSA does ATI, so I can't help you on any HESI information I'm not sure how my friends did on it either, but I believe they're both good students, the type to get a mix of As and Bs. I do think my one friend struggled during chemistry, but she really committed this last semester of her pre-requisites and got into the program for Spring 2013.

I think UTHSCSA and UIW are the only 2 straight through to BSN programs in San Antonio, but Alamo Community Colleges offers the RN/ADN program, and Baptist Health System has a nursing school with an ADN program, and an RN-to-BSN, I believe. That might be a good option because you'll already be in a hospital system, and I know there are often RN positions reserved for BHS new grads only.
