UIC Graduate Entry Program

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi folks,

Thinking about applying to UIC's GEP program. Anybody here applied and was accepted? What were your stats?

My stats: 3.2 Overall GPA/3.5 Sci BA in Sociology. Office Manager in home health care, tech in a medical equipment co, medical assistant (no cert) in dr's office and later office manager there. Volunteering in Nursing Home around 120 hours...

From what I can tell on their website, after completing the NCLEX, you immediately start the master portion of the program. Is this correct?

@hi - I really hope you get in, you originally applied FNP correct? I just think we were just put in a really bad position when that happened. I really don't want to wait another year either. Still pretty upset about not getting in.

I majored in Physiology and Neurobiology in my undergrad (out of college for 1 year now) but never had to take Microbiology, even though I've taken every other type of bio out there, none of them will cover Rush's Microbio pre-req. So if I wanted to apply to Rush for the spring I would need to take summer school on top of my 2 jobs this summer so I just don't know if that's possible.....really beating myself up for not 100% covering that specific class in college.

I have been thinking about sending in my app to Depaul, but I already live walking distance from UIC/Rush and always had my heart set on those, but I guess things are different now. Still debating and trying to figure it all out now.

Yup I was an FNP original too. So yeah, really tough process.

Micro was absolutely one of the best classes I've taken. I think ALL healthcare workers should be required to take it. Maybe I just had a really great teacher, but it really puts diseases in a whole new light. I know it sucks having to take a new pre-req when you have such a strong biology background, but of all the pre-reqs people have to take for these programs, I'd say micro is one of the better ones.

i still haven't got any emails, been checking m (inbox/Spam) like every 2 hrs yest and today.....anybody else still waiting for their results from UIC? Thanks

@mumu9- Call them tomorrow. That is all i can say. No news is better than bad news. Good luck!

I expect Micro will help with Pathophys and Pharma some too. I am not looking forward to either of those classes and I'm glad I have Micro already!

Thanks rainkissedleaves, i am too scared to do this. I guess i will sometime today

Don't be scared mumu! You have NOTHING to be scared about. You don't understand how scared I was just 20 mins ago when I got a reply about the reason for my denial. I finally had the courage to ask them and they told me I lacked nursing experience- they encouraged me to be a CNA. Allright, we move on. That's a legit answer because I do lack nursing experience even though I have tons of shadowing experience. I will consider UIC for my future placement (doctrate or even a job) and will let them know that I am a MUCH stronger candidate in round 2! Good luck! and keep us in the loop :)

@rain - that's what they said?? hmmm

I just enrolled in a microbiology class, kinda $$ but probably worth it as an investment in my future so I will be applying to Rush!

Luckily I looked at the syllabus and I have already learned everything on there in all my other Biology courses, and even tutored most of the material in college.

mumu - hope you get in!

Yeah, that's what the guy said. He said the committee allows very few students overall which makes competition very high. He recommended more volunteering or CNA

Ncami- isn't rush a CNL program?

Rain, at Rush you earn an MSN upon completion of the program, and are eligible to sit for both the CNL exam and the NCLEX.

So are you required to sit for the CNL? Or can you just get a RN with MSN? This is considering CNL exam is different than RN. I haven't looked into CNL so pardon my lack of knowledge

From what I understand, you can sit on both at the end of the two years. And also the transition to higher level nursing is easier...

"GEM students can complete a streamlined application for admission to a doctoral program after completing a year of the GEM program. Upon graduation you can take doctoral level courses while beginning work as a RN or delay your start until a later term. As an example, a GEM student who wishes to continue their education in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program could complete that program of study part-time in a little over 3 years while working full-time as a RN."

:( should I go to MU? (This question is open to everyone)... I kind of scared not going to lie. I am diving into this program 3 days after graduation and I really wanted to get a breather... Wanted to do things, work, travel and what not. I am questioning if I should apply to rush and de Paul ...? And start a little later than right away. I think there's many underlying reasons such as - I know no one in Milwaukee which is making me lonely already...
