I've seen a couple pages like this for hopeful UFV nursing applicants and figured I'd make one for this coming intake. :)
Congratulations !!
I am not applying until next summer-
if you don't mind me asking, did you apply for the four year / the fast track and
what were you grades / volunteer hours ?
Im currently so behind:
English 12- B+
chem 11 - C+
Math 11 - A
Bio 12- still have to take it ...
I am dedicating January - May 2017 for strictly upgrading my high school courses-
any tips would be perfect !
I applied for the four year track. I was going to do the fast track, however found out that I would have to wait for a September start date. So I decided to take the 6 month hit and start right away!
I had 100 volunteer hours in the hospital (mostly in ER, but I also did visitation and was responsible also for delivering charts haha). I will preface this by saying that my volunteer hours seem to be low relative to other people. I think the fact that I just finished my Bachelor of Science, Microbiology Major, psychology and mathematics minor, really helped "beef up" my application a bit haha.
As for my high school grades: they range from A to A+, but I don't remember the specifics anymore.
Tips: your grades get your foot in the door. I may be mistaken by this but I've heard from some others that whether or not you get to go to the information session is predominantly based on your GPA. This year I believe the GPA of the applicants invited to the information session was an A? You don't look so behind! Especially if your spending January - May upgrading
Honestly the hardest part was getting everything ready for the application and applying :)
The essay was open for interpretation, so don't worry about that, and the interview while nerve-racking was fun, and we were provided with more than enough time to answer each question.
If you want some stats about how many people applied this term, and how many got accepted I have them. If there's anything else you would like to know feel free to ask!! And good luck!
Hi Ndreamerg!! I know you've gotten a response already but I thought I would reply as well in case you were looking for additional data haha!
I also got into the Jan2017 program and I applied with straight A's (they only go by highschool grading so A+, B- etc. don't count, its just the letter grade). Dionkasper is correct, to my understanding, in saying grades are a step in the right direction. From what I have heard and seen from other applicants, to even get an invite to the info session, your grades should probably be straight A's (they also don't look at %'s, just the letter grade). I know in previous years that people have gotten in with, for example, 1 B and 3 As but I think that was not as much the case this year as nursing is becoming so competitive. My volunteer hours were just over 100 although I know that is, as dionkasper said, low in comparison to others but I also know someone who applied with over 1000 hrs and didn't get an invite to the info session. I'm also starting the program pretty much straight out of high school (I finished in Jun 2016) on my first attempt which I have been told is hard to do but still doable! The information session started right off the bat with the essay but it was honestly nothing to stress about, just as long as you have concise ideas and a clear format you should be fine. The rest of the time is just an overview of the program :) Furthermore, the interview was a bit stressful but again there was plenty of time to answer the questions and everyone was very kind. Just be sure to elaborate as much as possible and explain all possible answers you could have, there is no "correct" answer! Good luck and feel free to ask anything else :)
Hello Ndreamerg,
As others have said above grades are extremely important and will be the deciding factor if you advance to the interview/information session.
Tips for those applying:
1. Upgrade your grades if you haven't already (Apply with min. 3A's and 1B)
2. Volunteer volunteer volunteer! It will provide you with great experiences and will help give you an idea of what you will be facing going into Nursing. It also is a great way to pull experiences and incorporate them into your answers during your interview/essay.
3. Practice for the interview and show how serious you are! This past intake there were over 200+ applicants and only 32 spots.
Best of luck! Hope this helps! :)
PS. Congrats to the others that got accepted this semester! I haven't been able to find any active Facebook groups for this semester so I will be starting one up for Class of Winter 2017. See you all January!!!
Hey all! Is it possible to take some courses while waiting to get into the program....
-I have taken ENG 105...
-wondering If I can take STATS (and is it only 1 course of stats or two??)
-Also HSC 111 + 112 -> It says must be accepted into nursing program, is there a way to get around this? has anyone ever taken HSC at another school and have transferred it, I talk to nurses all day at my job as a unit clerk and they say that this may be a possibility and that it would lower the course load by millions for first year... some insight would be much aprpeciated thanks in advance!
I believe you can register for STATS and its 1 course I'm pretty sure. Also if you contact the Nursing program advisor and ask to be put in pre-nursing application which will allow you to register for the HSC 111 course. If you decide to take HSC 111 or Anatomy and physiology 1 elsewhere and plan to transfer, make sure you are doing the lab component and it transfers. My A&P credit from TRU did not transfer due to not having the lab component because I took the class online.
Best of luck!
