UFV 2012 Fall Intake - Insights and Meetings

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hello!

I'm starting this topic for two reasons: one, to introduce myself and make connections with anyone else that has also applied for the fall 2012 intake at the University of the Fraser Valley nursing program; and two, to make a few inquiries.

So, I'm a 23 year old resident in Abbotsford. I've recently completed my bachelor of Science with a major in Biology and heavy focus (should have officially done a minor :( ) in computer science/software engineering. I decided about 6 months ago that Biology was not quite the route I wanted to take, as it's incredibly difficult to find a job without a PhD. And since I much prefer hands-on work and prefer research as a hobby, I figured that 4 years would be better spent persuing something else. I considered Medicine, various tech position and even Health informations, but have settled on Nursing.

I applied at UFV, since it's closest to home and have heard a lot of really great feedback about their nursing program. I considered UBC, but the commute didn't sit well with me (you have little enough time as it is being a nursing student and with the price of gas on the rise, it would be attrociously expensive).

I have just received my notification letter regarding the information sessions on March 7/15 - anyone else going too?? :o I'm getting really nervous, and have been reading and absorbing everything I can find to prepare, lol. Everyone suggests just taking it easy and being yourself. I'm not worried too much about the grades. I had a 4.2 gpa in highschool (yay for honours classes), and have somewhere between a B+/A- average for university. If I could write off my one bad semester that would bump up to an A-/A average.

Nor am I worried about cost. I managed to pay myself through my first degree somehow, and could do so again, or cave finally and take out a student loan. Either way, I'm supported financially. My family are also all in the health care field, so I'm VERY familiar in that aspect.

I'm a bit worried about my volunteer hours, though. Since I did have to pay my way through university, I didn't really have the luxery of time to spend volunteering. I worked 2 years in a vet clinic - not quite the same, but very similar environment. I do have 40 or so hours of official volunteer time in hemodialysis and ccu at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. But I've been in and around the hospital all my life since my mom works there, and have been involved in St. John Ambulance as well.

I'm also concerned about the essay. I've read what the general interview questions are, but nothing on what I should expect to write for the essay. The notification I got in the mail said that we'd be given 3 questions to write/discuss to test our critical thinking. Any advice?

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any information anyone has to offer on the UFV interview and essay. I'd also like to get to know fellow applicants! :D

Cheers.

Yes Alka_Selse! I totally buy into the theory that all of us on here are just extreme keeners! The competitions got nothing on us :) I will for sure let you all know how my interview goes. I do know what to expect though (except that last year they didnt tell us our points or anything like that. I hope all the interviewers are doing that, not just the ones you guys had cuz I really wanna know where I stand!), seeing as I have done this allll before. Hoping for a different outcome this time around!!

Oh and mission...random question, are you FROM Mission?? Just wonderin cuz Im curious like that.

Ahahahahhaha!!! Yes I am. I timed the drive the other day to Chilliwack... 30 minutes, not bad. I work full time in Coquitlam, that's a 50-60 minute driver everyday :(

Where are you guys from?

Alka_Selse - I feel the same way listening to everyone's marks etc! I am really scared how my essay went - that could bring me down! You guys all sound amazing! So yes it is scary lol! It would be great if we all got in=) mission1234 - I live in Abbotsford. It took me 15 min to get home from the essay yesterday (I live pretty close to the freeway)

It is my second time also - First time I didn't even make it to the interview portion so this is my first time for that. You all will do great!!

^_^ I live in Abby, too. Hahaha, it took me around 45 minutes to get to the interview, and I'm right on Sumas Mt., so close to the freeway. I did, however, accidentally take a wrong exit since I'd never really driven through chilliwack before, and got a lovely tour of the industrial side of town :p I'll have to do a proper timed drive sometime. Camp, whereabouts are you?

Did your interviewer ask you guys what you put down for your answers in the essay? Mine did... The question I am worried about is the second one "Friend who gave false information". I wrote that I would probably talk with my friend about the implication of providing false information and etc....but I didn't say that I would turn her in. What did you guys put? I tried to explain to my interviewer that I struggled with this question, but I ultimately wouldn't turn her in. If it was a patient though....that is different (don't ask me how :S ). Just curious as to what you guys put. If it makes you guys feel any better, I am worried about my essay as well. It looked like chicken scratch with my dull pencil

Mission...I put that I would talk to my friend to try and get her to turn herself in, but if she wouldn't, I said that I wouldn't turn her in either. My reasoning was more or less it would be my word against hers, and it would more than likely end in some long drawn out processes that may or may not be resolved correctly. Then I said that there are liars and cheaters everywhere in our world, and since her lie in the end is only hurting her (as opposed to lying about something that would effect the welfare of a patient or other) I would focus on improving myself and my own life, and let it go. This is honestly what I would do, I don't know how "correct" it is, but I wrote it out and explained my points well (I hope) and I think it was more the critical thinking and processing skills they were looking for, so I'm confident about my answer. I'm sure yours is good too, as long as you explained your choice.

Im from Chilliwack BTW, I may have mentioned that before. I can be at the UFV campus in 12 minutes flat but I speed, as I'm thinking some of you do also (Mission to Chilliwack in 30 minutes??? Really??? And I thought I had a heavy foot lol)

Hi everyone! I had my interview last Friday morning. I also don't remember the lady's name, but she was super nice as well. I originally was pretty nervous, but even the written portion during the information session calmed my nerves. It was nice hearing that people with the best chances had already been selected for interviews. (I kind of figured that interviews would be decided AFTER the information session...so receiving an early interview letter was a nice surprise!) Also, I thought there would be waaaay more applicants, as applicants for programs at other schools can sometimes range in the thousands..so I thought that hearing there are only 170 complete applications was definitely a bonus.

Anyways, the interview went great. I left it feeling really confident about my chances. When my interview ended, she said she "looked forward to seeing me in September." I told her that I hoped this would be the case, and this is when she went over my application summary with me. I had the maximum amount of point for marks (4.0 GPA), maximum amount of points for volunteer hours (recorded 120 hours from work at a Physiotherapy clinic + a number of volunteer hours for time at a youth group for brain injured teens), and she said that my interview was perfect. I hope it's true that we also get bonus points for having post secondary experience, as I have 3 years of sciences at SFU. She got excited when she saw this and started looking through my transcripts at transferable courses right away, and told me I should think about talking to an advisor about transferring as many credits over as I can. She also liked that I have work experience as a Patient Care Specialist at an online pharmacy. She finished the interview by asking me if I'd applied at any other schools. When I told her I had, she said she only hoped that I would choose to study there, as she felt I would make an excellent representative for the school. She also told me that "when I get my application letter" in the mail that I should make sure I read the pamphlet that's included, as apparently it has information on an assignment coming up in September.

Is anyone else in the Surrey area? It took me about 45 minutes to get to the school, which isn't that bad considering that there is no stop and go traffic!

I just found this forum today, but I think it's a great way to get to know other potential students! I'm starting to get really excited, but am trying to stay calm until I actually receive official confirmation in May! Good luck to everyone!!

Alka-Selse - I live on Eagle Mountain so really close to the freeway and you! Did you go to school in Abby? Welcome Jshadows - Congrats on your interview going so well! Nobody said see you in Sept to me or hope to see you in Sept lol. That is great!! I would feel very confident =)

jshadows - Welcome to the forums! And wow, sounds like you have nothing to worry about *jealous* I have to get my post-sec courses sorted out. Hardly any of my courses from UVic/UofC transfered over directly and I have to send in like 20 detailed course outlines for UFV to review. I think I'll be able to knock off 6 or so courses from the BSN program, though, which would be about one less course per semester - that'd be nice :) Glad to hear your interview went well, though! Wish your drive was better, lol. But you're right - at least it's all highway driving.

camp11 - Eagle mountain? Haha, you're probably my future sister-in-law's neighbour! And yes, I went to Robert Bateman.

jshadows, congratulations and welcome! I'm glad your interview went so well. Where does UFV stand in your choice of school? I remember reading a lot of posts from students who applied to a few schools, and a lot of them decided to stay with BCIT. What is your first choice school? I went with the "all eggs in one basket" approach. I live in Mission, and driving out to Burnaby was not an option, and I preferred UFV over Douglas.

Invictus - I didn't have a lot of Traffic on my commute last week, two speeding tickets has slowed my driving down as well. :nono:

I also got the "I look forward to seeing you in September" but i'm not holding my breath.

Where is this 170-180 applicants number coming from? That really doesnt seem like a lot. Wonder how many actually got interviews...
