UFV BSN SEPTEMBER 2020 INTAKE

Published

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying to UFV's BSN program for the Fall 2020 intake and figured I would create a new post where those of us applying for the Fall 2020 intake can share/help each other out with the application/admission process. Anything from discussing GPA for pre-reqs, volunteer/work experience, etc. A little bit about me - I am just about finished my HSCI degree from SFU but took this semester off to retake some of the high school pre-reqs (Chem 11, Bio 12, Math 12). I did fairly well in these classes during high school but figured I could retake them again and see if I do any better.

As far as my healthcare related experience goes, I have been volunteering at a seniors home for 6 years now, and was recently hired by the same seniors home to work as a recreation aide. I also worked as a recreation aide at another seniors Independent Living/Complex Care facility for about 1.5 years. I also spent a year volunteering at a high intensity rehab unit where I helped the OT facilitate various exercise groups (this was during a time where I was still unsure between OT and nursing).

I'm hoping to complete my high school pre reqs by the beginning of January so that I can make the January 31 deadline. This will be my first time applying to UFV or any nursing program for that matter.

Hopefully this forum can be a place where us prospective UFV BSN students can help each other throughout the application/admission process and give each other pointers! Best of luck everyone! ?

Most nursing programs these days don’t maintain a “waitlist” in the sense of being accepted into a program and waiting for a spot to open up in an upcoming intake for a future year. Most schools, like UFV, require you to reapply each intake. However, all schools will waitlist a few applicants from each application intake to fill spots that are declined by other students. For example, I was offered a spot, but may still choose to decline my seat and accept an offer from another school....and then UFV will offer my spot to one of their backup candidates from their waitlist. However, once the program actually begins, everyone left over of the waitlist will have to re-apply.

Ahh okay, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you for clearing that up for me!

so when people are saying come in with straight A's, they mean it then?

Yes, I would think so. I've been reading through older forums for previous intakes to UFV's BSN program, and most people that were accepted had straight As in all 4 of the pre-reqs. I have seen a few people here and there get accepted with 3 A's and 1 B, but very few. On the website it says that shortlisted applicants have a minimum of 2 As and 2Bs, but I think when considering the competitiveness of the program, 4 As is what guarantees an offer, along with good scores in the other categories.

I got in, if it helps here were my grades etc:

GRADES

Pre calc 12 = A

English 12 = A

Chem 11 = A

Anatomy and physiology ( Equivalent of HSC 111 +113 But at BCIT) = A-

Volunteering :

-50 hours at care home

-about 70 hours at hospital + leadership recommendation

EXTRA QUALIFICATIONS

- First aid instructor

- BCRPA instructor

- lifeguard/ instructor qualifications

ESSAY/INTERVIEW

I felt confident in both but I don’t know my exact points

This is really helpful! Thanks Chantal, you've been really thoughtful with sharing your experiences/answering my questions. It's really appreciated. CONGRATS again on getting accepted into the program!

so clearly by what everyone is saying is come in with top grades, the website shows a little different (C+ in Math 11, C+ in Bio 12, C+ in Chem 11, C in English 12)

I guess because it is so competitive to get in you have to have top grades.

yeah and on the website it also says you must have 30 volunteer hours but when I had a meeting with an advisor she said that they only give the full 6 points for 101+ hours.

Yeahh, the first time I applied I had 3A’s, one B ( I got shortlisted) but I got cut after that because I only had like 55 volunteer hours

Hi everyone! This is my first time commenting, I got accepted into the 3 year program! CONGRATS to everyone else accepted and I'm excited to meet everyone!

I've requested the facebook group as well.

Congratulations! How do you know which program you were accepted into? I also applied to the 3-year program and have heard that I’m accepted, but I haven’t seen anything about it being the 3 or 4 year option?

@Chippy812

Sorry I don't know how to continue the thread, but I emailed and asked what program I was accepted into! They just got back to me today and told me it was the 3-year one! They probably should've included this information in that initial email with the conditional acceptance.

Does anyone know how many students are waitlisted?
