UCSF MEPN 2023

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I thought I’d create a thread since applications for the June 2023 start, should be opening soon.  Would be great to discuss the process, dates, etc.

Best of luck! -Megan

@Nursee2beThanks for all the insight! I really appreciate it.  @mmCAI’m excited to hear about what they have in store for us this year.  I’ve definitely been given the same advice, spend time with family, travel, etc because it will be intense one we start.

Hello Everyone, I am also apply for the MPEN program I am interested in the CNM. I have two questions.
Does anyone have any insiders about the application dates? My first who is graduating this years say they are just slow with things this year..
For those also interested in CNM speciality how do you feel about them talking away the dual WHNP/ CNM?

Hello all,

In preparation to apply to the MEPN program, I see only the Nursing MS application is available. The last time I applied, it was a MEPN specific application. Does anyone know if this years Nursing MS is the same as the MEPN specific application? Have they consolidated, or did the application for the MEPN program not yet open?

Hi, I spoke to someone at the front desk yesterday and she said to check back on the 7/28 and I should see updates about the MEPN application open enrollment dates.

The UCSF MEPN website was updated Friday, July 22 to say folks should check back in late August for program updates. It also says, "At that time, we will provide new information about pre-licensure study and our application process, which is expected to open in late 2022." It's all a bit of a black box still.

Thanks for the info! I am also applying this year to the PMHNP program. I am feeling very anxious now about what the future might look like with the new "DNP by 2025" thing. I am confused why it is not announced sooner like CRNA programs, which gives much time for programs and students to plan ahead. I really hope those graduating with MSN wanting to be NPs in 2025 can be grandfathered in.

Thanks for starting this thread!  I’m in California, Bay Area (East Bay) and applying for the AGPCNP specialty.

I’m actually appreciating the timing of the program change and delay for applications because I am finishing my last prereq class this fall and hoping I can apply a cycle earlier.

If there is anyone who is wants to connect locally, I’d love to!

I’m applying for the same @Jen L.

I would love to meet up. I’m in the East Bay as well!

That would be great @megan.ach  I am new to this forum.  Not sure how to private message you, the site says I am allowed 0 private messages when I tried!

We're a total of 48 students. For the first year, your specialty track does not matter since everyone in your class takes the same classes and generally, similar rotations for clinicals. Out of the 48 students or so - about 12 are FNP. It is hard to gauge each year how many per specialty because it's based on a number of things. They told us specifically we have a smaller cohort due to changes in the program and staff/faculty needing to focus on revising the curriculum. Additionally, we're no longer at other institutions like before (Stanford, Kaiser, Dignity), strictly at UCSF hospitals/locations.

Again, my year may be the outlier compared to previous and upcoming years.

Also,

I recommend if ya'll can - get settled into whatever place/location you'll be at. Whether it's UCSF or another program elsewhere. A lot of us worked straight up until the program starting and we're already feeling it week 1.

Take care of yourself this year - school will be there. Travel, rest, and enjoy the remaining year you have left before the hustle and bustle of school.

Hi again Nursee2be! How is your second month of MEPN going?

UCSF delayed the opening of this year's application - they've said there will be an update later in August and they "expect to" open the MEPN application later in the year. It's all quite vague and worrisome for those of us who have been working toward applying to UCSF for quite a while! Eek. I wanted to ask if you happen to have heard anything recently from MEPN classmates/MSN students/faculty/admin about the program changes and the next application cycle. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @mmCA,

Unfortunately, we're in the same boat as our current and previous cohorts -  no updates in regards to what the DNP switch entails. It's all been very frustrating...

I do not know when applications will open and how your cycle will be affected. Faculty and staff have been quiet about any updates or changes, we suspect they're still figuring it out truthfully.

We are more than halfway through, in week 7 and 3/4 weeks to go and then we get 2 weeks off before jumping back into the Fall quarter. Honestly speaking, it has been a whirlwind of emotions. From being mentally and physically exhausted to being overwhelmed by so much info and learning. I finally figured out my routine about 3 weeks in which sounds about right for my classmates too (LOL).

I will say when applications do open - take your time to thoroughly read and answer the prompts/statements fully. Even the "optional" ones. Your grades can get you through the mix of applicants - but that personal statement and those prompts are what get you an interview. Really speak on why you chose your specialty and why UCSF. Hope that helps! ?
