UCSF MEPN Program 2009 Applicants

Published

I thought I'd start a new thread for those who specifically applied for UCSF admissions 2009.

Feel free to post your concerns, vents, and happiness here!

Good luck! :nurse:

Does anybody know an approximate breakdown of how many slots there are per specialty? Also, do we fill out a FAFSA for 2008-2009 or 2009-2010?

Sorry, I'm not sure how to answer both questions

Fill out the FAFSA 2009-2010. I called Student Financial Services and that's what they told me.

From what I've heard, it varies. I think there are about 2-3 slots for ACHIN and about 6-12 for FNP. I believe they fill the master's programs with MEPNs first, then they add in applicants who are already RNs. UCSF loves MEPNs - they are looking for fresh new ideas and people with "life experience."

For FAFSA, there is a link on the UCSF webpage that will tell you how you can contact the financial aid office. I need to get started on that soon! (I think it's due March 2, right around the time we hear back if we get in!)

Sure:

GREs: 770 Quant, 550 Verbal, 5.0 Writing

GPAs: UC Berkeley 3.41, Community College for Prereqs 4.00

Experience: 3.5 years Peet's Coffee (leadership roles), 14 months volunteer Medical Assistant and 9 months paid Triage Assistant at non-profit community health clinics that focus on the underserved and uninsured, few months as a volunteer tutor for elementary school kids, 9 months as a resident assistant in the dorms, few months as a Laboratory Assistant at UCSF, and some other job experiences such as retail, AIDS Walk, etc.

Previous major: Molecular & Cell Biology, emphasis in Genetics & Development

GRE scores are not super important. What is important is job and personal experiences that inform your decision to seek a career as an APN. Your application as a whole should show UCSF that you have the whole package (you can do well academically, you have job and volunteer experiences that would be a good "fit" as a prelude to nursing, your goals are focused, you know what specific role you want to undertake as an APN, appreciation for diversity, and your letters of recommendation should confirm the rest of your application).

The best piece of advice I can give you is plan ahead and don't apply until you feel your application will be competetitve! Wait another year if you feel you need to build more experience. The goal statement is a HUGE factor in your application. Draft, redraft, redraft, redraft, etc. Good luck to you!

Hey v517-- I met you at the ucsf interview! I saw in the columbia thread that you got in there, congrats! so did I! but I'm still waiting for yale and ucsf. is ucsf the last you're waiting for?

Anna right? I was wondering about you! Congrats on your acceptance to Columbia! Yes, I'm waiting just on a decision from UCSF right now. I hope we'll see each other again WHEN we get our acceptances.

Are you going to NY for Columbia's Visitor's day? I'll probably go because I've always wanted to see New York.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to columbia's visitor's day... I agree with you, I kind of want to go just so I can spend some time in NY...

my interviewer had heard about allnurses.com and asked me what people say on here. Haha. Anyway. I'm just waiting for March 3rd... Good thing February is a short month! :D

There are some pretty good deals at Virgin right now. It's only $107 to fly each way out of SFO to JFK. I'm planning to go for a week in the first week of March. And I just came back from a 5-day trip to Memphis by the way :D.

I'm praying I'll get accepted to UCSF though. For me, the cost of Columbia+housing is about TRIPLE that of UCSF, because at least in the Bay Area, I can live at home and already have a car to get around. With the amount of money I save, I could put a down payment on a house!

What did you tell your interviewer about Allnurses.com? Haha! I tend to be a little paranoid and I try not to post too much personal info about myself here.

Hi all,

I am applying for 2010. I have looked over the application and am a bit confused about the difference between the goal statement and the personal history statement. I understand that the goal statement is geared more specifically toward how we plan to use the degree. Do any of you who were accepted have tips on not sounding redundant in the two statements? Also any tips on entering as a midwife? I know it is a long shot!

Thanks,

Anne
