Hi,
Is there anyone lurking who is planning to apply to the 2011 program?
I have spent the last 12 years in financial marketing/communications and am excited to try and change paths into nursing. I am currently taking my prerequisite courses at city college- stats and anatomy/physiology- and going in for the GRE Saturday. I'm volunteering at a children's hospital, which is causing me to consider the pediatric nurse practitioner track... I know UCSF is very competitive and it's a long-shot for someone like me to get in, but I feel like I have to try! If it doesn't happen next year, then I'll just keep building my volunteer experience and re-apply. Also on my mind is that if for some miracle I were to get in how I would pay for it.
But enough about me... what are some other candidates' takes on preperation, interests, anxieties, etc?
Hello,
I just found this thread - I've mainly been lurking in the CA nursing programs thread. I am also planning to apply to UCSF (midwifery track) for 2011, along with USD and APU.
Background: I was a polisci major and went to law school afterward. Had a baby and now want to be a nurse. Just finished taking stats the past 6 weeks and took the GRE last week as well. Got a 1300 and been debating whether or not to retake it. Next 6 weeks is anatomy and possibly physiology as well, which would be way too much but we'll see. There is always the option to take physio during the fall (to whoever asked, I called and they said you can indeed apply whilst prereq is in progress). Will be taking micro and chem in the fall as well (not prereqs for UCSF, but for other schools). I just started volunteering at Sharp a couple of months ago as well.
Honestly, my hopes of getting in aren't that high as I don't have a ton of experience
Good luck to everyone! :)
Hi all!
I'm applying to UCSF this year in the midwifery track.
I have a background in women's studies & medical anthropology and have spent the last 7 or so years doing doula work, assisting homebirth midwives, and working as a breastfeeding educator at a WIC office. I started a licensed midwifery program in California before deciding that I ultimately want to be a nurse-midwife, so I've attended around 100 births in that capacity (several of them where I was the primary midwife). I feel like most people think this is a good amount of experience, but UCSF has me very nervous!
In general I feel okay about my experience and prereq classes (all A's right now), but I haven't taken the GRE's yet so I need to get on that ASAP! I also haven't gotten very far on my personal statement or my letter's of rec.
Anyone else still need to take the GRE? I'm unclear on when the absolute latest time I could take it would be and still have the results there on time. Anyone know how long it takes for them to get scores to a campus?
Babymidwife:
Welcome! Your experience sounds amazing! When I hear stories like yours, it feels like a reality check...
Regarding the GRE, I was wondering the same thing so I asked them. Their response: "Official Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing scores will be released from our offices and mailed to you and your score recipients within 10 to 15 days after you take the test. Please allow an additional 7 to 10 business days for delivery within the United States and up to 4 weeks for international mail delivery." To be on the safe side, my exam is scheduled for 7/31.
Best of luck to you and everyone else applying this year!
The UCSF GRE code is 4840 (for UCSF) with a department code of 0610 -- I think 0610 means nursing because it's the same department code for other schools as well.
Here is the link to find the 2010-2011 GRE codes for all schools.

Does anyone here know how long recommendation letters should be?
I don't know how long the letters of recommendation are supposed to be, but they are the part I'm most worried about. I asked my letter writers far in advance with the expectation they would receive instructions from the school in June (when the application period was supposed to open). Now we're heading to the end of July and I'm afraid they are going to think all this waiting is a reflection of me. I'm sending them updates every few weeks on the nil status of the process, so hopefully they don't think I'm a total flake.
Is it too much to expect that UCSF will have a brief apology/explanation for the holdup when they email our letter writers?
The schools website does say what letters should address, "Recommendations should address the following areas: [a] relationships with work (paid or voluntary) associates, work competence, [c] communication and interpersonal skills with persons of diverse backgrounds, [d] leadership skills or potential, and [e] values, ethical standards, responsibility, and initiative. Recommenders are also asked for an overall rating (from zero to ten) of the applicant."
I gave this info to my recommenders ahead of time and they will sumbit the letter when they are emailed.
Maybe frowarding this to your recommenders may help them get started.
I'm taking the GRE on Aug.2 I hope it's not too late. I am applying to the FNP specialty which has an 8% acceptant rate. That statistic just brings my hope down. My medical experience is minimal. I volunteer at a community clinic and I work with disabled children in schools. My dream is to work as a NP at the clinic I volunteer at, so hopefully UCSF can make that happen. What specialty are you applying for?
I don't know if you guys knew this, but I have just noticed it today and wanted to share this with you:
1. Beginning with the 2011 Cycle, we are encouraging recommenders to simply complete a short set of on-line survey questions instead of compiling and uploading a "letter of reference." Those who prefer the traditional letter can still use that option. Think about persons who know you well and know your work and volunteer activities. Get the contact information (email) for these individuals, they will be your best references.
it is posted here:

I think the survey option might be faster and easier for recommenders to do.

My update as of 7/6:
"The online application should be available within the next week or so. We advise you to prepare your goal statement and submit transcripts in advance."
Both of which I haven't done.
