2011 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Published

Hi,

Is there anyone lurking who is planning to apply to the 2011 program?

I have spent the last 12 years in financial marketing/communications and am excited to try and change paths into nursing. I am currently taking my prerequisite courses at city college- stats and anatomy/physiology- and going in for the GRE Saturday. I'm volunteering at a children's hospital, which is causing me to consider the pediatric nurse practitioner track... I know UCSF is very competitive and it's a long-shot for someone like me to get in, but I feel like I have to try! If it doesn't happen next year, then I'll just keep building my volunteer experience and re-apply. Also on my mind is that if for some miracle I were to get in how I would pay for it.

But enough about me... what are some other candidates' takes on preperation, interests, anxieties, etc?

Has anyone else needed to change the day of their UCSF interview? I was just offered an interview at Yale the same day as my UCSF interview. Yale says absolutely no changes to the schedule, so I'm wondering if UCSF is the same...

Has anyone who has RSVPed for the interview actually heard back from UCSF? I RSVPed last Monday and still haven't heard from them! Maybe I will call them tomorrow.....

Hi Pedsnursehopeful,

Yes, I rsvp'd last Thurs the 9th and got a reply on Friday the 10th. It wasn't anything fancy that they replied back. They just said "OK"- literally. Figured I had something in writing and that's all I needed, but now I'm starting to get paranoid that I need something more formal from them confirming my RSVP. ha!

I also got "ok" in the email. I think we will hear more after the holidays.

I as well got the "Ok"

Hey there, I have an interview for Family on the 21st. Really looking forward to meeting some of you! Any idea what to expect from the day/interview?

Hi everyone,

Congratulations to all of those who got in. I'm planning to apply for 2012, and just took my GREs for the first time (520Q 610V). My score is fairly low, but it is technically in their 500-700 range. Those of you who got interviews, do you think i should take it again? Did you guys mostly do better than that stated 500-700 range?

First of all, I can't believe I actually made it to the interview stage, but I did and I'm very excited. I'll be there on the 21st for the FNP program.

Also, I wanted to let anyone know that I live just a 15 minute walk from the main UCSF campus (and I've been working for UCSF for the past few years), so I know quite a bit about the neighborhood and the campus. If anyone has any questions about the area, let me know. Also, I'd totally be down for some coffee, drinks, or doing a little neighborhood tour after the interview if anyone is interested?

Congrats to those of you who have been offered an interview. I remember the fear, excitement, and anxiety I felt as I prepared for the big day almost a year ago! For those of you who did NOT get an interview, I also experienced that in 2008! It felt awful but I reapplied and got in my second time around. Being in the program, I've also come to realize that UCSF is not the ONLY place to get this kind of education. It is indeed a fabulous school, but there are other phenomenal programs as well. :)

I am in the UCSF MEPN program and I blog about it! Feel free to check out my ramblings if you're curious what the program has been like for me...

I'm also happy to answer any questions you may have about the interview day.

Best of luck to you!

Hello sfcentric,

Thank you very much for your words of encouragement and for your willingness to answer questions about the interview day. I've included below a few questions for you.

Do you know how many people were accepted last year for the FNP specialty, or do you know how many could be accepted this year?

Do you think that about 50% of those interviewed are accepted?

In your opinion, what is UCSF looking for in candidates on interview day?

Please feel free to share any advice you may have for interview day.

Thank you so very much!

Congrats to all of you who got an interview. Are there any other ANP applicants interviewing on Jan. 28?? Is business casual dress appropriate for the interview or is a suit recommended?

Good luck with interviews!

I am still shaking :heartbeat - just opened my deceptively thin UCSF letter to find I have been selected for an interview for the Psych/Mental Health NP track on 1/28. After following this thread and noting the stellar qualifications of everyone I was honestly not sure what to expect. Everyone on here is so encouraging and warm, and I know we will all find our path with both perseverance and patience =).

Is anyone else interviewing for the Psych/Mental Health track? Would be great to "study" for the interview together. My boss actually gave a talk in SF last month and gave me the contact info of a woman he met there who recently graduated from the Psych/Mental Health program and offered to chat with me about the interview process, etc. Even if you are not interviewing for this track, would still love to chat about the school, interview, etc.

Hi, wish I'd found this message board last month! Anyway, I have an interview for the psychiatric nurse practitioner program. I was also totally freaked out by the thin letter! Especially since two of my friends had just gotten rejected :-( Anyway, I don't know if people met up or what, but if anyone is still game, I would love to talk this through with other people going through the same thing! I feel like I am qualified and I would do well, but at the same time, I have no idea what to say in the interview or how to express this! I live in Oakland.
