Uconn Mein 2017/advice please!

Published

Hello All,

I'm new here and would love your advice. I'm about to graduate Uconn with a B.A in psych. I recently decided to make the transition into nursing and hope to start an accelerated program in 2017. I'm doing bio and chem this semester, A&P 1+2 over the summer, then genetics and microbio in the fall. I currently have a 3.86 GPA, just need to do well in the pre-req's.

From my research, I found that Uconn, Fairfield, QU, Saint Joe's and Southern have accelerated program's. I am most attracted to Uconn because I like what Uconn has to offer having completed an undergrad there and because the Waterbury campus is just 10 min from my parent's house.

I'm a bit nervous about the application process since I won't be able to be reviewed for the Uconn program until August. Has anyone here been reviewed in August and gotten into Waterbury? What did you think of the program? Also, I'd love to hear advice from others in the state! Anything will help :)

Hi! If anyone has specific questions regarding the UConn CEIN program, I am currently in it and would be happy to answer questions.

Hi! what was your GPA for all the pre reqs classes and for bachelors degree gap? Where did you take genetics and was it hard or easy?

Hi samyxx, my undergraduate gpa was probably around a 3.3, maybe even less than that. I was a biology major at UConn. Most of my prerequisite grades were As with a few Bs. In my case, I had to retake genetics because I had taken it more than 5 yrs ago, but I took it online the second time around through University of Phoenix. It was not terribly difficult, but if you have never taken an online class before it may take some time to get used to the style of the course.

You should know that the students in this program have a variety of educational backgrounds. Some students did not have any clinical experience, whereas others, like myself, worked in the field for a few years. Do not try to compare your credentials with other applicants. Just go ahead and apply if this is what you want to do! The program is basically like a full-time job, but there is lot of support to get you through it including an advisor and mentor.

Any other questions?

Hi Samy, I took genetics online through Asnuntuck CC. It was during a short summer semester, so the workload was a little intense but not nearly as bad as an "in-person" summer class (I did that for chemistry). There were a lot of writing assignments that needed quick turnaround, mandatory participation in a discussion board, and weekly exams. But there were no recorded lectures to listen to, just power points and reading assignments. The book (Cummings) was engaging and I do feel like I learned a lot - it's a fascinating subject.

Hi CVT, thanks for being willing to share your experiences! I am going to Stamford too in January. I am prepared to work! How has your experience been so far - do you find the program to be well organized? What are some of the clinical sites for your class? Also when do we find out the schedule for the year (breaks etc) - at orientation? What weeks are you off this year in April/August? Thanks for your input!

Hi HC92, so far the program has been a great experience. Please be aware that the schedule changes a lot throughout the year so you will have to be flexible. At times, there will be last-minute changes. It is relatively disorganized, but don't focus on that. The instructors are very good. The clinical sites change a bit from year to year. For my first semester I was at Greenwich Hospital and now I am at Silver Hill for our psychiatric rotation. This year we get a spring break in March and the week of thanksgiving off. We also are off from 4/24-5/8 and 8/14-28. However, we are never truly off. Expect to study through breaks. A basic schedule will be given to you at orientation in the fall, but you won't know your lecture, lab, or clinical days.

Thanks so much for the great info! Much appreciated. Hope your semester is going well.
