UCONN cein 2015

U.S.A. Connecticut

Hi!

Has anyone applied to the uconn cein for 2015? The first application deadline was Jan 31st. If you did apply have you heard anything yet??

I'm just anxious to find out.

People have said on the forums that Storrs fills up really quickly. When I spoke with the admissions they said the same thing. Personally my top choice is Avery Point. I'd rather drive north in CT since I live in the new haven area oppose to south going through the traffic down by the other locations. Good luck though hopefully you'll get your top choice. The current students can provide insight into ranking the campuses. But they all have the same curriculum. So my guess would be the personal opinions on professors and how they do their clinical placements depending what campus you're on. But again I'm waiting to hear back also and can't provide any real insight into the program.

When I was being emailed last week confirming my review for today's application date I asked if there were any storrs spots left and I stopped getting replies back after that email haha. I guess they didn't like my question! Storrs is my top choice though so I hope there are some spots left!

I have heard that storrs and Waterbury both accept 30 students while the other campuses allow 15. And that Avery point is the least requested campus, supposedly there are more spaces available there normally

I was told all campuses could take up to 30 when I met with somebody about admissions last year. I'm not sure if they end up taking that many on every campus though.

Waterbury and Storrs take 32 each; Stamford and Avery Point take 24. Or at least that's what happened this year (class of 2014). Clinical groups generally have 8 students, so the admissions are in multiples of 8.

Anyone that is in or has completed the program, around how much did you end up spending on books? And are there any books that we really don't need to buy that are considered required?

You have to buy all/most of them. BUT you can save a lot by buying older editions. Usually the content is nearly identical. In the bundle for the spring, we got the Pharmacology book, a huge (two edition) Med-surg book, and a nursing diagnosis book - we use all of them frequently. The bundle also contained a test-strategy book and a nutrition book I have never opened. Not in the bundle was another basic nursing book that was used frequently in the spring during the clinical lab (not terribly well-written, but some of the test questions came from here, so good to have). We also bought a drug guide that is VERY helpful - you will want a good drug guide, but you don't necessarily need to buy the one on the list. The spring also requires you to buy access to a group of dosage calculation modules and a video series - neither is particularly helpful, but part of your grade is based upon doing quizzes, so there's no getting around it.

The spring semester bundle is expensive, but the books are used throughout the course. We didn't have to buy new books for the main fall class (med-surg) because we're using the same pharmacology and basic nursing book we bought in the spring. For community nursing this fall, I got the older edition for $11 with shipping from Amazon; it's the older edition and not only is the content nearly identical but the professor just emailed us a list of page equivalents for the readings. And I spent $23 to rent the grad class book (nursing research). So realize you are front-loading for the program when you get your spring books.

I probably spent about $300 for the first semester (e-book for the bundle, hardcover for additional books, and the on-line modules). If I had to do it again, I'd go with older editions. Then I spent about $50 total for the 3 summer courses (rented one book and bought the other two in previous editions), and as I posted above, about $35 for the fall.

I am going to be in the Waterbury program and was wondering if anyone had any idea about the length/dates of our vacations? I am currently trying to plan for next summer, and was hoping to get an idea of when we will have time off.

We had 2 weeks off after the spring semester, and two weeks off after the summer semester (just started the fall classes this week). Do realize that you might have a final on a weekend; our pediatrics final was on Saturday 8/9, so I had to take my one-week vacation during the second half of the summer break.

The CEIN schedule is slightly different from the rest of the campus; we started summer classes on 5/7

This is so helpful; thank you for sharing. I have 3 small children...do you think it would be unwise to try to work more than one shift while in the program? If I keep a Saturday night shift, is there a way to be sure I'll never be scheduled for clinicals that night of the week? Thank you again!

Congrats to all of you who have been accepted!!

I put in my application for the August deadline. I was wondering how they contact you if you have been accepted...is it by email or by letter, or both?

I got an acceptance package in the mail. It had an acceptance letter as well as a few info sheets and health forms to fill out. As far as I remember, I didn't get an email. I got really lucky haha, my mom forgot I got mail and thankfully by the time I opened it I still had a few days to return the RSVP

I just received my acceptance letter to Stamford this weekend. I'm very excited, but nervous too! I submitted my application for the Aug. 20th deadline and my acceptance letter was dated the 26th, pretty quick turn around! Does anyone know where the clinicals potentially are for the Stamford campus? I'm from New Haven and have 4 young kids and I hope to get something close to home if possible. Congratulations everyone!

Congrats! I've been stalking the mailman myself waiting to hear!
