UBC nursing application 2011

Published

Hello,

I'm new to the site and I saw the thread for last years appilcants to UBC nursing so I thought I would start one for this year.

How is the application going for everyone, any tips from 2010 intake?

Iris - Congratulations!!! Looking forward to meeting you and everyone :)

Hart16 - I also registered for Group 2!

Allemande - There's some stethoscopes online for under $100 but then there's shipping costs... Some uniform stores (eg. Images) sell them for ~$98 (~$110 with tax included).

k_mb,

I understand that clinical days/hours might change over the year, but will we still be notified in advance? Or are schedules assigned right before each rotations? I consider my job shifts quite flexible as I can switch shifts with other staffs easily, and I really want to keep my job during the program....

ubc2011,

you will know usually a month in advance where your placement is going to be and if it will be 8 hour or 12 hour shifts. That being said.... I think your first one you guys have might be a little less notice because there is 120 of you to place as oppose to 20 once you break into your smaller groups after the winter holidays. We just found out our placements a day or so ago for the first week of September so we got 6 weeks notice...usually you get 4-5 weeks notice. Again, that CAN always change last minute. It is very confusing with how they have to ask for placements (a computer system puts all the schools into the system and then sends out the placements so it is random and not biased towards any school getting "better" placements). One thing you will learn with this program is that you have to be flexible!

Also scrubs.... sidney1013, you have to wear the UBC scrubs you can't wear any kind of scrubs. That being said you could just order the tops and then buy pants the same colour somewhere else which a lot of people do because the scrub pants you have to order are ****** with sizing. But you MUST have the same colour and you MUST have the UBC shirt with the logo etc.

Hi All,

Just a heads-up for everyone still needing to book an immunization review; I booked mine today and got a spot on SEPTEMBER 20th!!! Hopefully I'm one of the last! (And getting rid of my procrastinating ways!)

Ohh no, just to clarify my previous post, if you're looking for a stethoscope, I was saying people can find them AT some uniform stores. Slightly cheaper than the one online or at the bookstore! :)

Has anyone figured out what the deal is with health insurance? I notice that it is part of our fee structure, but do we still pay MSP monthly? Perhaps someone already in the program could help me out with this issue? Thanks!

I'm not sure 100% about that but I don't pay anything monthly to MSP. I think it is part of your fees at the beginning. I don't know anyone that pays anything monthly for insurance in the program. Unless it is for the student health services because they have family signed onto their plan.

Hey hart! How do you book your immunization review?!! helpppp!

Call the Student Health Services line 604.822.7011 and tell them you are entering the Faculty of Nursing in the fall and need to book your Immunization Review. They will ask for your student number and other info. You will need to book a 40 minute appointment and another quick 5-10 min. appointment 3 days later. Mine are Tuesday and Friday. Hopefully you will have flexible availability because mine had to be in September because I'm still working fulltime. Goodluck!

I'm thinking of booking a short trip over Thanksgiving weekend from October 8-10. Does anyone from previous years know whether or not we are required to work stat holidays?

you will never have to work a stat holiday while you are in school. You guys have a lab on the 7th and you have the 10th off of school. I believe your scheduled should be posted on the nursing website now.

Hey everyone, it's getting so close, congrats to elle and iris, so great that we will be seeing you at the end of the month!

Hart16 - As for MSP I beleive as students we are all considered low income and should get premium assistance. I had a full time job where my MSP was paid for a couple of years ago and then became low income without any MSP coverage. I applied with the MSP (you can find all the info on their website) for preimum assistance and now I don't pay any monthly fees. It is based on the previous years tax return for proof of low income so if you are high income up till september I think you would have to wait till next year (or even the year after if you made more than 30,000 this year). You can also apply for temporary assistance. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. I am not sure how it works for students coming to BC for the first time or for those who have never had thier own MSP before (i.e. they were covered by their parents).

Kmb - I have a question about the text books. I saw in one of the letters that **** sent out that it is very important that we have our books the first day because we will have readings. When will the upper years be selling their books? I am also hoping to buy my books early to avoid the crazy bookstore line ups!

I think a dinner in the next couple of weeks would be great! Lets make it happen!

See you soon!
