U of Southern Indianna?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Anyone familiar with this school with any comments? I'm sort of looking at them and the U of Pheonix right now.

I'm thinking of further schooling too . . . but not sure what direction. I don't want a BSN in nursing, I do know that.

Keep us updated about what you find out.

Can you leave the babies behind though? :crying2: I don't have a specialty area that I would really miss . ... . I'm not crazy about bedside nursing anymore. I do like the ER . .. not sure if I would like teaching ... .it is hard to be middle-aged and searching . ..

I can't imagine giving up my babies completely. Ideally, I'd like to do teaching part time and work NICU or L&D part time. I could always take a travel assignment during the summer eh? I was actually thinking of taking a L&D position here, but now I'm going to a christening for one of my babies next month and it just made me realize I could never give that up completely.

I know what you mean about searching... I'm always thinking about what I should do, where I should live, blah, blah. My mom calls me a gypsy. :chuckle

Yikes!

Boy, I'm not sure I'd be up to defending my thesis - conference call or not. :uhoh3:

Yeah... I'd prefer a non-thesis program myself. I just looked, it's actually 726 per credit hour!!! It's obscene. The BSN is only 336.

Well, that is a better nickname than "fertile Myrtle".

One of my instructors from nursing school worked in her specialty area in the summers . . pediatrics. I recently found out she got her Masters and still teaches but also still works in peds.

Most of the instructors did not do bedside nursing anymore. This instructor just rocked! We all loved her - she was down to earth, smart, caring, and didn't try to scare the merde out of us.

Some teachers just leave such a great legacy . .. I'll never forget her.

:chuckle Fertile Myrtle?! :chuckle That's hilarious!

Yeah, my fave instructors all kept up as bedside nurses. I do think it helps to keep up to date with reality. It was hard for me to listen to nurse educators who hadn't worked in years tell me I would be commiting career suicide if I didn't do med-surg as a new grad.... (I am so glad I didn't listen!!!)

I'm glad for you too . .. .although med/surg can teach you alot, there is no real reason to do it, in my opinion, if your focus is elsewhere.

I have mentioned that I have a friend from nursing school who went into NICU after a few months in the general nursery. Also another friend who went straight into ICU. It can be done.

I have to give kudos to med/surg nurses - I couldn't do it - I'd probably crack.

As to fertile Myrtle . . . . the name isn't that far off because one of the names my parents had picked out for me was "Maud Ellen" . .. . :uhoh3:

steph :)

Maud?... Well, I'm glad for you that they didn't stick with that one:)

I think I would have quit nursing altogether if I had to do med-surg as a new grad. I would've gone home crying everyday cause it's so hard!

Hey, there is a supermodel named Maud. :chuckle

There are some threads on here from new grads who are ready to quit . . . .I feel awful for them. I'm so lucky I work in rural nursing . .. it was my very first job as a nurse. I too think I would have quit med/surg in a big hospital.

Well Miss Gypsy - I need to hit the hay. Talk to you later ....

I "attend" USI, although I have done everything on-line so far. I am in the Management and Leadership Master's program, and can't say enough good about USI.

I don't know the specifics about the Educator program, but I assume it would be just as good.

I would highly recommend USI to anybody!
