U.K. Nurse met US criteria

I am a UK Adult Nurse (qualified in 2013) and I have just met the requirements for US nursing (by the NY BON). From frequently reading UK to US nurses posts, I was convinced that I would never be able to work in the States. If it's qualifications you're concerned about, I would like this post to provide others who are feeling disheartened with some hope. Best of luck to everyone :)

How the hell did you manage that?! But seriously, well done though! I qualified 2007 adult branch and applied to NCBON and have been told that i'm lacking in maternal/paeds hours. Who did you use to check your education?

I really struggled with both my university and CGFNS - i have 12 months postgrad education as a health visitor which I would have hoped could have counted towards my paediatric/maternal nursing. In the end I couldn't get it accepted and now am faced with trying to find out how to top up my hours? There's lots of information about how we lack the required hours but none on how to get them!!

Anyway, congratulations and good luck with your NY licensure!

Sorry for the delay in response! I've heard NY is a bit more flexible with the requirements? I'm not sure if it's true. My university was quite good in ensuring we had exposure to the other branches of nursing. I also used CGFNS for verification. I'm currently trying to endorse my license in NJ and CA but a bit worried I will not get approved as they seem to require more evidence than NY. Hope you managed to get your license in the end!

Hi Ayodele!

I passed the NCLEX first attempt 2 years ago. I sat an online course through Kaplan. It was quite tough and I studied for about two months! I think I reached about 185 questions when my machine shut off. Lots of questions on psychiatric drugs! I recommend the Kaplan course (although it is quite pricey!). You have access to a tonne of resources and questions. I wasn't scoring the percentages they recommended before I took the exam but I still managed to pass! I'm not using an agency because I have a green card. I'm moving in May so I will keep you updated!

Thank you for the info. Have you got a job?

Hi, fbull. How did you fulfill the requirements for ob/gyn and pediatrics? I would love to know how i should obtain those requirements :-)

Hi! In my first year of university we shared our modules with mental health nurses paeds nurses and midwives. We also had to complete assignments in each of the different branches to meet EU requirements. To be honest I was quite surprised I met the requirements because I had limited obs/gynae exposure. I had exposure to paediatrics in a dermatology placement.

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to follow-up with some updates. I received my endorsement for my NJ license a few weeks ago which I was convinced I wasn't going to get. My university didn't really outline my hours on my transcript but I spoke to an assessor at the BON to emphasise my experience in paeds and mental health. Having my NY license was probably quite beneficial as well.

I have a women's health background prior to working as a practice nurse (but still maintained some women's health skills with this job) so I used that as my direction when applying for jobs. I interviewed for an IVF position and a gynae clinic position and accepted the gynae one because it was less specialised and they're training me to work in recovery/fertility as well! I am three weeks into my training and feeling pretty happy with the work and management ? I'm hoping I still feel this way in a year!

Hello, I am just now gonna start my Bsc adult nursing in a University and I would really like your help on what to do in order to have enough theory and clinical hours to be able to move to the USA once I become a nurse. Please sent me a private message as I can’t for some reason, your help would really be appreciated :)

You need 15 or more posts to access private message. Be aware UK training is specialist not general and doesn’t meet US requirements. You need to either arrange with university to get clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult or look at doing training in the US which will cost $$$
