Are you in nursing school currently?? YOu don't really establish a specialty in school, everyone gets general nursing education and then you train in a specialty area after you graduate and start working. of course there are ways to begin getting exposure to a specialty area by working as a tech, nurses aide, volunteer etc in that area. Other than that, I'm not sure what you mean by establishing a specialty area??

you cannot get into any nursing specialty until you have an rn license to practice nursing. the only way that is going to happen is for you to go to and graduate from a nursing school like everyone else. after you finish nursing school you must take the nclex which is the licensing exam. if you pass that exam then the state you live in grants you an rn license to legally practice nursing. it is at that point that you start looking for a job in the nursing specialty you are interested in hoping to find an employer who is willing to take on a new graduate and train you in that specialty. this is the way it works in our profession. here are links to information on how to become a nurse and on the many different nursing specialties:

Toward the end of nursing school, you can apply to various interships, externships and residency programs (different hospitals call it something different) to get training in a specific areas. In my area, All Childrens has the Versant program to train nurses in pediatrics and specialty areas such as ICU, ED and OR. The VA hospital has a program for ED, ICU and OR. There are programs in hospitals all over the country. Look in the student nursing magazines or search the web to find out more information.

Gillytook, may I ask which area of the country you are in?
specialty training programs are all over the country. the larger the hospital, the more likely they are to have a training program. you find these programs by calling the hospitals and talking with their nurse recruiters, subscribing to nursing job papers (there are a number of them online), looking at the job ads in the major nursing journals and attending job fairs for rns in the area where you live.
