Hi Everyone.. I just want to get a feel for what I should expect in an orientation for a new job. I'm not a new nurse, been one for 6 years, but have been out of the patient bedside nursing for two years due to a medical issue. I just got "canned" two weeks ago because I was not "advancing" fast enough and they had to fill that position quick. How long would you expect an orientation for a new job NOT as a new nurse?

Thanks guys and gals!

Well, I have oriented several nurses of varying skill and experience levels so these are my thoughts.

Had a nurse who had one year of med surg exp and one year clinic exp, she got two weeks because she was good on computer chatting.

Had a nurse with six months ICU exp but she hadn't worked in two years, she got two months.

Most recently had a nurse with 15 years med surg exp., but she was terrible at computer charting and time management. Normally with her experience she would've gotten two weeks but she got a whole month because she just couldn't comprehend the computer system.

My hospital is very pro-orientation and they try to give as much time as fiscally possible to develop a new employee before letting them go.
