I just wanted to start a new thread for all of us who will be starting the CyFair program this Fall 2009. Congratulations to all of you!

have you done your CPR training? I've already started the background check, want to make sure I get all my ducks in a row before June 15th...

Hi guys, congratz on getting in at LoneStar! I am currently a student at the Willowchase location and have considering applying for the nursing program, but right now I'm just doing prereq's. I do have a question about the application dates for Lone Star's nursing program, can you only apply once a year in the summer for the following spring term? I was a couple classes shy of being able to apply this summer so if I choose LoneStar I'll have to apply next year. Thanks for your time.

Spring semester application period is from July 9th to September 15th. You can apply to the spring program and the fall program. I have heard you need a higher HESI score if you are trying to get into the spring program (as in nothing lower than an 89 on the reading portion of the HESI), but every semester is different. No I haven't started my CPR training yet...I will be looking at CyFair to see if they offer anything there. I'll post any information I find.

They are the cheapest I've found: $40.00 if paying cash, $45.00 by credit card

They are located on the SW side of town, closer for me.

LoneStar college charges $51.00 plus $16.00 for materials (I think) you'll have to look at the continuing education link for a class listing. The only classes available are coming up soon and are located either at the Woodlands or North Harris, but the website did not specifically say BLS for Healthcare Providers.

I have signed up for the (Instruction By Masters) class this Friday 4/24 (9 AM - 11:30 AM) to get it over with. I'm currently taking pharmacology at HCC and barely have any free time (the class is DIFFICULT!), Friday was one of the only days I had available. I'm hoping HCC pharmacology will transfer to CyFair even though they are different course #s. HCC was my back-up plan if I did not make it into this program, but alas, I did. I just want to finish it off and be done with this course.

Anyways, if any one is reading this before 4/24, sign up for the CPR class with me. At least I'll know someone before starting the program. :D

Im glad you started this thread. I just received my acceptance letter to Cyfair and I am so excited. I also need to take the CPR class and will look into this Fri with you. It would be nice to meet some of the future nurses before class starts. Is anybody else a little nervous about Cyfair? I've read some horror stories on this website about how difficult the instructors make it and the high dropout rate. All in all, I am looking forward to what my future has to hold. I have also heard the program was tough, but I've also spoken with some of the people who work there and they are all very helpful. In the end it is all worth it...here's some encouragement... I took this off the LoneStar "archived news link". It's about our college!

"Nursing students at Lone Star Colleges passed the state licensing exam with high marks recently.

The 2008 Texas Board of Nursing National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a computerized examination designed to test knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry level. NCLEX examination results are an important component used by boards of nursing to make decisions about licensure.

Both Lone Star College-CyFair and Lone Star College-Tomball reported a 100 percent passing rate on the NCLEX while LSC-Kingwood, LSC-North Harris and LSC-Montgomery all reported a 90 percent passing rate or greater..."

Did you read that? Our college as of 2008 had a 100% pass rate for the first timers taking the NCLEX! Not too many colleges can say that! For the full article, here's the link...

Hi dj, thanks for your response and the link to Cyfair's website. I was doing some research today and was able to dig up some information on their site about application dates and when the programs start. What I am curious about is if you have to apply for Kingwood seperately than the other schools since it looks to me like they do a pool of the other four colleges and Kingwood appears to be seperate since they have evening courses. Not sure if that's how they do it or not. But I know that you have to apply in the summer and the course starts in the spring vs the other schools are you apply in the spring and it starts that fall. Unfortunately I'm going to have to take most of my pre reqs this fall and finish them up in the spring so I won't be able to apply next spring for the following fall semester. :o

Does anyone have an opinion on which branch of the school is best? I had read on another post that Montgomery was really good and that the hospital where you do your clinicals was one of the better ones. Any idea?

As far as the Fall semester application, you are able to select up to 3 out of 4 colleges in the Program when you apply. You select your choices in order of preference from a drop down menu on the application. I would imagine that you would be able to do that for the Spring semester too if those colleges offer a Spring starting term.

You are right about the pool of applications. They get your application first based on your score out of 12 points and go in order from highest to lowest until all the spots are full. When your application is selected they see if there is availability at your highest preference college, and if not, they go down your list until they can put you in somewhere.

As far as which school is the best...everyone has differing opinions as far as lectures, clinicals, professors, etc... You shouldn't base your choice on what other people say. Base your choice on the facts. I think any accredited school that has a NCLEX first-time pass rate of 90% or higher would be a great school to get your education. In the end it's not where you graduated from, it's whether or not you get the knowledge and skills needed to pass the NCLEX, and a college's NCLEX history report would give you that information. All of LoneStar colleges and HCC are at a 90% rate or better.

Hi Dj, thanks so much for the great response. I went ahead and enrolled for the fall semester, so I'm hoping to be able to test out of math 0308 so that I can get into API in the fall. I am currently in math 0306 and I'm passing it with an A so I'm hoping it won't be a problem. I figured I will be able to get all the prereqs out of the way during the fall and spring semester since I'm taking 2 out of the 3 this semester. I enrolled for Kingwood for the fall so that's why I was curious whether or not they were included in the application process for the other schools because when I looked up the actual application dates Montgomery, Tomball, and North Harris all have the application period of Jan-March, and then Cypress has one in both Jan-March, then one from June-July, and then Kingwood is from July-Sept. So if you were to apply for the fall semester I'm assuming you'd have to choose from Montgomery, Tomball, North Harris or Cypress right? Then you'd have to apply for Kingwood seperately? At this rate I don't think I'll have the classes done in time for the application period for fall 2010 so that would push me back applying next summer for Kingwoods program. Do they offer shorter classes in the spring like the 8 wks courses that you could take to get those last couple prereq's done in order to apply for spring semester?

Thanks djNyla for all the info!! Actually I plan to do that same dance on graduation day!!:dancgrp::chuckle:chuckle:chuckle I've gotten so used to checking the mail all day everyday, today I didn't know what to do with myself. I guess now I can focus on my CPR class and making sure all my shots are up to date.
