Aaaaalriiighty! With the large volume of nursing students who applied for TWU this Fall semester and the very few amount of drop outs, it's time to start up the Spring 2017 applicants forum topic!! I'm one of the waitlisters who didn't make it into the Fall 2016 Dallas nursing program, but definitely had competitive scores.
For reference I had a GPA of 3.86 (3.68 nursing core) and a TEAS score of an 87 (top 3%). That left me with a total of 47.7 points (43.83 for Spring 2017, but I'll explain).
Now keep in mind that this semester TWU will no longer be looking at cumulative GPAs, but only the nursing core GPA. Other than that, the change in the Program Materials on the Nursing CAS application, and that you don't need to send a transcript to NursingCAS, there have been no major changes to note for the Spring 2017 semester.
Also, to those who either scored less than me or have a lower GPA don't let that discourage you. Last application cycle was a weird one with close to triple the amount of Honor's students (HS=guaranteed acceptance) and an unusually low declination return. Last Spring, the lowest accepted student had about 43.1 points. Which equates to about a 3.6 GPA and an 82-85 TEAS. If you can hit that ballpark you're in a good spot. Also, since there was such a high percentage of HS for Fall 2016 it's likely that there will be a much lower HS Spring turnout.
Stats for the Fall 2016 accepted students
Dallas lowest accepted: 51.1pts (40 HS)
Houston lowest accepted: 35pts
Now be advised that there is a full 20 points given to any TWU student with 32+ credit hours. That means if you're a TWU student with 32+ you've got great chances. Now for you transfer students (such as myself), I advise studying your tail end off for that TEAS in order to be competitive. It's not impossible, but it is improbable if you don't produce excellent returns.
Let me know if you have any questions about the application process or how the point system works and I'll be glad to answer. I spent hours researching and talking with advisors, so I've gotta lot of slick info in my book. Also, I'll probably post the actual calculator excel spreadsheet they use for calculating points later, so you can play around with it.
I got my acceptance email for the Houston nursing program!!! Since it sucked like hell waiting, just wanted to update you guys here and more importantly, give the STATS that I know future applicants will be clawing through the acceptance threads for like I did.
Nursing prereq GPA: 3.73
TEAS score: 92.7 composite; 90.5 Reading; 100 Math; 87.5 Science; 96.7 English
Prior degree included
Notable things:
- I took online courses as part of the prerequisites because I didn't have enough time to do some at the same time as my ongoing Bachelor's
- Which on that note, I did have the 8 point bump for a prior degree, but my score was already around 54 before adding those in.
- The online courses I took were Developmental Psych, Nutrition, Microbio Lecture/Lab, and Human Anatomy & Physiology Lecture/Lab. I took all these in person at my university too, but at the higher General level; I wanted to retake them for higher grades i.e. B -> A or C->A too in some cases. I'd never taken psych or nutrition in person, though.
- My GPA for my Bachelor's in Biology is actually a 2.5. I think makes it evident that the overall GPA is definitely not considered for admission!
- I retook numerous courses and my TEAS was also my third attempt. My first attempt was around an 87. The study guide I worship is this: Secrets of the TEAS V Exam Study Guide: TEAS Test Review for the Test of Essential Academic Skills - Kindle edition by TEAS® Exam Secrets Test Prep Team. Professional & Technical Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.
- The Math score in the TEAs affects my application score the most when I play around with it.
With all that said, I consider myself having been a pretty chaotic, risky applicant and want to share it with you guys, and especially those wondering what options you can take and what you can still do to be accepted if you didn't get in this round. For those of you with doubts, don't ever give up and don't be discouraged if you're struggling with scores or grades!
Congratulations to everyone else who's been accepted so far! If you're a Houston applicant, shoot me a message and maybe we'll meet sooner than we think xD
