twu spring 2012 applicants!

U.S.A. Texas

Hey guys! I wanted to start a forum for us twu spring 2012 hopefuls!

About me

I have a 3.2, yikes! :sofahider, and after this summer it should come up to a 3.6 or 7 and I am studying my butt off for the teas and will only have 3 more classes after that to take. I have gotten into the university as the first step, but I am so worried about getting into the nursing program, fingers crossed :uhoh3:

What about computer requirements for Houston?

@L8blumer: I just read this tread and found out that you got accepted to twu. I just want to know how much you made on teas test to? I plan to apply for the next fall, and I have about the same GPA as you?

so I plan to take a entrance test for twu and just want to know what is the lowest to get accepted?

Hi! I'm accepted to Texas Woman's University (TWU) in Houston and I wanted to invite anyone who got accepted for this Spring 2012 to a facebook group. Its called "TWU Nursing Houston: Spring 2012!", it's really for our convenience to help each other during school. Congrats, and good luck to anyone still waiting for their news! :)

PS. I tried finding the other facebook group circulating, but couldn't find it?!? :( thats why i had to go and make one.

Hi, i tried to find your group on facebook, but i couldn't could you send me the link or add me. Thank ^^

Hey everyone! I added everyone who requested to join the Houston fb page! :) I am really think the first attempts make a huge difference, too. I had all A's on my first attempts except A&PII (I had a B and retook it for an A), but my TEAS was a 91, so I'm sure that cancelled it out. Both schools (UTHSC-H and TWU) have the same requirements, though, which is why I applied to them alone.

Congrats again to everyone accepted and good luck to those still waiting :) don't lose faith!

Hi, can you add me on facebook too? I couldn't find the group. i'sm accepted on spring 2012 :)

Thank you a lot

I'm currently at TWU Dallas Nursing if you have any questions (I should be studying for 2 tests next week, but taking a break). I requested to join the Dallas FB group as that may be easier for questions (I'll unjoin later).

You can take an elective class in the summer to lighten your course load. You can't graduate earlier though in the traditional program.

TWU Dallas J1 schedule (can always change):

Mon: Pathophysiology (9-12) then Assesment lecture 2-4 (not every week & some online)

Tues: Pharmacology w/Dr. Tapler 9-12 (LOVE her; tough class but she rocks) (AM); Concepts lecture 1-4 w/Prof. McMenamy/Team taught (afternoon)

Wed (all day): Assmt Lab or Concepts Lab or off (I had assmt lab 8-4:30 on Wed).

Thurs (all day): Assmt Lab or Concepts Lab or off (I was off/at work on Thurs)

Fri (all day): Assmt Lab or Concepts Lab or off (I had con lab/clinical 8-2 on Fri)

*(so you have Lab for Assessment and another lab/clinical for Concepts). BTW: you don't start Clinicals/hospital until week 6. Plenty of time to learn basic skills, patient care. You will have Hospital Orientation before then, but no direct patient care until week 6.

Lab/Clinical uniform (DALLAS campus; Houston is different):

-white top, maroon/wine pants. Can be any brand. Graduating seniors will start sending emails over break to sell theirs cheap (where I got mine) or check local stores, Amazon, etc. Buy at least 2/ea.

-all white or all black shoes is official (real world: some instructors don't care if you wear non-flashy running shoes; others enforce the solid color rule)

-nametag, TWU badge + ID

(Optional: blue zipper fleece- this is the ONLY jacket than can be worn during clinical. Most profs will let you wear any jacket during lab, but enforce this for clinical).

*TWU-NSA sells a complete package as a fundraiser for their pinning ceremony (not that much markup). You can get this at orientation. I bought my nametag, patches, optional nursing kit & jacket from them and bought scrubs on my own. I bought my stethoscope online ($85 w/free engraving). They recommend a 3M Littman Classic II SE, but any stethoscope must have diaphragm AND bell.

Orientation: TWU-NSA accepted credit cards via Paypal. You get your school photo id, register for classes (don't freak- there's no rushing to register as everyone already has a seat in each class), sign up for any student orgs, order supplies/scrubs and be overloaded with info. ;)

Majors sells the J1 textbook package. BUY THIS!!! I'm not joking. It's pricey ($900+), but some of the books last over multiple semesters. The package includes all the online codes you will need. Yes, you can save $100-200 by buying them separately at Amazon, but it's a huge PITA to individually buy the codes later.

Classes: don't read the textbook for Pharm (read/skim the chpts 1-8 before Day 1). Dr. Tapler tells you not to read the textbook, but use it as a reference. Her tests are directly from her notes. I skim the chapters for Concepts & read them for Assmt. Patho: you MUST read the textbook. Tests are from the publisher (ie: from textbook, workbook, online non-graded quizzes). Tests are not from her notes.

Calendar: Going old school. make/buy a month-at-a-glance calendar (I made a quick one in Excel). Don't rely on your phone/Outlook. You need to physically touch/see your entire month at once to see what's due.

Wow, that's an insanely long post.

I'm a details, org person but remember being overwhelmed the first 2 weeks.

@Mippy, you're first semester, and even now, how are the professors and staff? How are clinicals? How do you like the program? What semester are you in currently? Did the program fly by? And do you enjoy the clinical experiences you're given?

Specializes in OR Circulator - Neurosurgery.

Thanks Ladydeeb. This is truly helpful!

@chen, you're welcome, but thank Mippy for that very helpful info. Have you been accepted for Spring 2012?

Specializes in Pediatrics.

So happy for all of us who have been accepted into the Dallas/Houston programs :yeah:! Congratulations to us all!

To all of those applicants who have not been accepted: Please keep in mind there are always last minute changes in classes. I know someone who was notified of her acceptance two weeks prior to classes beginning. Also, please remember that everything happens for a reason, but you just may not know the reason yet. Time will always show you. Don't let anything detour you for your dream of being a :nurse:!

To the Dallas group:

Congratulations to all of us who will begin our journey this spring. I will preface these next few sentences by saying that I haven't seen every post in this thread so I apologize if there is any duplicate information.

We already have a Spring 2012 group page on Facebook and I would love to add you if you haven't already been added. The 30ish members who are already members decided it would be a good idea to have a class contact list. I'm collecting all the information (name, email, cell#, & if you have facebook). I will attempt to find you on facebook so I can add you to the group page. Please email me at [email protected] so I can attempt to get this completed prior to orientation on 12/9. I'm so excited to begin this journey with you all.

To our Houston counterparts: WHOO HOO for you! I'm so happy for you. Best of luck on your nursing journey!

Lori Luke, SN

Has anyone received a package in the mail? I responded to the acceptance, but nothing else has been sent. Orientation is on 12/9, where did you get that info?

After you're accepted is that when they begin processing your fafsa?

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Rosett: They have not sent anything in the mail. The only thing we have received are emails from A. Spinozzi. There are only two that needed to be responded to:

1) the acceptance into the program

2) the drug screen and confirmation form

She just emailed the info on immunizations today.

ladydeeb4213: fafsa has nothing to do with the nursing program. That is for the school as a whole and helps to determine financial aid.

oh ok, so once you've applied to the school they will process it?
