TWU Houston Fall 2011 Accepted

Published

Hello, I got in to TWU - Houston for Fall 2011. I accepted the offer and I thought it would be good to have a place for everyone who was accepted to talk. :nurse: I am so excited to start!! I think it'd be nice to know fellow nursing students before starting classes.

Thanks DMShopefull!

From what I understand UT Houston is the one that does not have summers off. They just work straight through. Which is great if you want to get it done faster. But, not if you want to enjoy your summers or would like to pick up summer externships or volunteer work in between your semesters.

I'm hoping to find out what the general schedule is like. I know the clinicals will vary from semester to semester, but it would be nice to have a general idea of a what the course schedule is like.

Thanks for the info and good luck!

Does anyone know what the class schedule is for TWU Houston?

As far as I know we will not know our schedules until we meet for Orientation. I don't think any of us have received our packets yet.

Hey Everyone!

I'm glad to see I'm pretty much on the same page and just waiting on the packet... I was getting nervous I missed something. Does anyone know how long the orientation lasts?

OPHELIAS WINGS- Within the past year I met with different SON advisors to get an idea of what to expect. They definitely each stressed the idea of keeping my schedule completely open, they try to make each schedule as fair as possible... they just make sure you have everything you need for that semester and that your classes are not all over the place lol. But as in being able to pick that schedule... I would definitely go in ready for anything... Hope this helps.

I'm not sure but I've read online about the orientations from past students and it seemed like they were long. Like 8am-3pm! But I'm not 100% sure.

If anyone has any questions you can try searching TWU Houston Fall 2010 on here and go through their thread (very long, tho!) those who got accepted kept posting even a little bit into the first semester so you can find a lot of information there.

I am a current TWU student so if anyone has questions feel free to ask and I'll try to answer them.

So far what it looks like some are confused on:

1. Your advisement session should be in May. When you guys get your packets it will tell you when and where to go. You'll be greeted by some instructors and other staff and try on scrubs (you don't have to buy scrubs through the school but you DO need the TWU patches to be worn on your left shoulder) and order them if you choose, meet some advisors, and get information about both Fall and Summer classes.

2. For the summer you guys can take Pathophysiology if you choose to. Most people recommend it to lighten your load in the fall but if you choose not to that's your decision. At the advisement session you will have to decide so your advisor can sign off on it. Patho is usually Thursday nights (in the summer AND the fall), I'm not sure if this is going to change or not.

3. For the Fall you will take Concepts, Pharm, Assessment, and Patho (unless you took it in the summer). You do not get to choose the times for the Lectures, you will ALL be together in one big room. Concepts and Assessment are generally on Mondays and then Pharm is usually Tuesday nights, not sure if there are any changes for the Fall.

4. You will also not get to choose when you have Assessment lab (lab portion of the class is at school) or Clinical. You also do not get to choose your clinical LOCATION. You have no choice, you go where they put you and they usually don't like for people to "switch" although they did allow a few to do so in my first semester if they were accidentally assigned clinicals that were very far from where they lived. [They try to place you based on where you live but it does NOT always work out.]

5. They will let you know at advisement the date you can actually go online and register, but you must go to advisement to fill out a form or else your classes will not be unlocked for you.

So basically a lot of your first semester you do not have a choice about whatsoever. That changes a bit in your second semester.

Junior 2's get allll their names put in a hat/bowl/bucket and then drawn out one by one and you get to go up and put your name down for the clinical section you want. But if you're one of the last people picked you're still not really given a choice. (this method is used for the rest of the program)

All of the major Lecture portions of the classes are ALWAYS predetermined and you don't have the option of taking it at a different time/day. You are all together, always, for lecture. The only exceptions are some classes in your last semester, electives, I think, and online classes (online class material is generally the same but sometimes you will have a different instructor assigned to you, it's just so not only one person is grading 100 or so papers. some grade harder than others, tho).

Also, you can take the CPR class at school. TNSA (Texas Nursing Student Association) will be at your advisement and you can sign up for a class if you decide to pay to join TNSA. Or I think you can sign up for a class even if you don't want to join TNSA but I'm not sure, I think they discount the price if you join though.

Thank you Natatat. That is some very helpful information!! :)

Has anyone received the information package through mail yet? I spoke with the houston nursing department and was told that our orientation will be on may 17th but I am still waiting on the immunization forms and clinical forms. I wonder why its taking so long.

You should join our Facebook group if you haven't. It's under the same name as this thread. That's good to know it's on the 17th! We are all still waiting for our packets. Trying to be patient but it's hard!! :)

I haven't received anything yet, either... I live in North Texas and will most likely be moving to the medical district. Is orientation in Houston or in Denton? Also, if you already took Patho and Pharm can you get credit for it? The school I currently attend requires it as a pre-requisite. Thank you!

Whichever campus you are accepted to is where your orientation will be. I think you can get credit as long as it's an accredited school, but I'm not 100% sure. You should probably call the transfer office or something. :) congrats!!!
