SURVEY: ONE-THIRD TO BUY CHEAPER CANADIAN DRUGS, 100 MILLION FIND INSURANCE COVERAGE CUT OR COSTLIER
Faced with a double-barreled crisis of shrinking health care coverage and fast-rising medical costs, two out of three American adults (67 percent) now think health care coverage should be a "guarantee" as in Canada, Britain and other nations, according to a new Results for America national opinion survey. Three out of four American adults (78 percent) agree that health care is a necessity like water, gas and electricity and should be "regulated by government"...
A friend and her husband worked at the same company for 20 years. She got really, really sick -- turned out to be cancer. Although the insurance paid well and always covered everything...there was a $1 million lifetime cap on what the policy would pay...in 20 years, she birthed 3 children, had a hysterectomy, had her gallbladder removed, plus her yearly mammograms, miscellaneous bloodwork, physical exams every year...then the cancer...chemo resulted in a deep vein thrombosis...she was through that million a good 6 months before she died. They lost all their savings, their home, the car...he's living with one of the kids now. At least he couldn't liquidate his retirement fund.
Health care is as basic a right as education. Our society (United States) as a whole doesn't have the best track record on either. We'd be a lot better off if we spent more time & energy improving these two basics before we spend billions shooting off NASA toys into outer space or studying cow farts.
Still better to support NASA and cowfarts which produce mathane and can power a car as opposed to waging war in the Mid East

That is such a sad story, and I suspect an all too common one. People are saying that "people should take responsibility for themselves", well I have no idea how much healthcare insurance costs, but what if you can only afford a $40 a month premium? And you or your child falls ill with something that isn't covered in this price bracket? Tough ****?
It is totally beyond my comprehension that a person's health is at the mercy of the amount of insurance they can afford or amount their employers will pay for. I may sound over-dramatic, but what price life?
The NHS isn't perfect and you do hear some bad stories. But compare this to the thousands of lives saved every year. We pay for it in our taxes and I find that more than acceptable, in fact, I think it is my duty as a citizen. The most important aspect for me? FREE on the basis of need, not on the ability to pay.
