Two-Thirds of California Nursing Home Staff Quit Their Jobs

Published

I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize it was this bad:

"More than a third of California's nursing homes have failed to meet the state's nurse staffing standards, contributing to a majority not passing federal inspections, a new study has found.

A report released today by the California HealthCare Foundation, a Bay Area nonprofit philanthropic group focused on improving health care delivery, found that more than two-thirds of the staff in the state's 1,400 nursing homes left their jobs in 2002."

Thanks, that's interesting! Anyone knows why so many nurses have quit their jobs in nursing homes?

The work is very hard if you are not an independent nurse with the ability to handle a crises patient and staff related. Sometimes the doctors do not call us back when we need them, family members can be out right demonic. You pass the meds, do all treatments, supervise overworked underpaid CNA's,plus a truck load of paperwork. Sometimes you do things out of your scope of pratice (depending on how much you trust your DON with your license) which can be scary. If you work 3-11 or 11-7 you are it no supervisor on the floor and you're responsible for 48 patients. Personally I love it.

G-d bless you!!!

I couldn't do it.

Why WOULD anyone stay when they can make better pay & have smaller nurse/patient ratios in a hospital? California nursing conditions are the best in the nation now, in the hospitals.

I've been working at this 32 bed convalescent hospital as an LVN for a year now and I'm getting out. The pay's way below what acute care LVN's make and I don't have any benefits even though I work 24-32 hours "on-call" a week. The CNA's (some are good nurses) are lazy, gossipy, insubordinate, don't have any ambitions to go further up the career ladder as LVN's or RN's, and they don't care about your license. Family members expect the impossible from me since I'm the "charge nurse" (others are super understanding). I have to answer the phones, do security rounds, and MAKE HOT PLATES for the residents if I have to *lol*. I even hand out checks to my co-workers! All of this excludes my medicine/wound treatment rounds. I also don't have any scheduled breaks since I'm the only licensed person on my shift. My break's when I'm in the latrine!

The only thing positive about my workplace is the experience and the adorable residents who I'm very popular with.

My dream job is to work in the E.D. as an LVN or even as an ER Tech (I'm a soldier medic and that's where I belong).

cna's are not nurses.... therefore you're right... the bad apples out there really don't care about your license.... your license is not thier concern.... but there are many many great cna's out there that do care about our license... it's really too bad that you have some bad ones there.... sounds like you have a full plate, i couldn't do it.... that's for sure!!!
